Former Strictly Come Dancing contestant Ann Widdecombe, 73, competed in the show with Anton Du Beke, 54, in 2010. Speaking on the That’s After Life! podcast with his 2004 Strictly partner Dame Esther Rantzen, 80, the professional dancer was asked about “rumours” she had heard about his dance partners.

“Ann Widdecombe,” Esther began.

“Unbelievable,” Anton added before she quizzed him about a rumour she had heard.

She continued: “Is it true that she insisted the wardrobe department made bloomers for her underneath all her floaty dresses, so that as you swung her around there were no glimpses…”

“Of anything unspeakable?” Anton chimed in, finishing her sentence.

He then confirmed: “Yes, you’re absolutely right, she wore these long sort of probably leggings she had made.

“Certainly with the Latin costumes, which may have been a bit shorter and showed a hint of ankle.

“She didn’t want any flesh to be on view. I thought that was a blessing.”

Esther then asked Anton if it was true Nancy Dell’Olio had champagne she shared with her fellow contestants in her dressing room after every show.

“Before if you asked her nicely,” the dancer joked, which prompted her to ask if she had been drunk in the dance-off.

“I don’t remember,” Anton jokingly replied.

On working with Esther, he went on to say he “had to be really aware of my Ps and Qs”.

The former dancing duo were voted out of the show in week three of series two, which was won by Jill Halfpenny and Darren Bennett.

In 2010, Ann and Anton became the ninth couple to leave the competition.

The former politician was previously asked if she thought about getting “jiggy” with Anton by Piers Morgan.

“Don’t be silly! The point is, he was in it for the dancing, I was in for the fun and relaxation and that is what Strictly is supposed to be about,” Ann exclaimed.

“There is no such thing, Piers, as the curse of Strictly, it isn’t some hex that makes people behave that way, it’s their own lack of control.”

The curse is a term that refers to couples who have got together or split up after taking part in the BBC show.

She added: “He’s 20 years younger than me. Spare us Piers and stop talking rot!”

Last year, he discussed his initial reaction to being partnered up with Ann.

He told The Times: “[I thought] Hello, what am I going to do with you?”

“But I chucked her, I flung her, we danced the salsa, for heaven’s sake,” and it was “brilliant fun, brilliant fun.”
