With a “heavy heart,” Outlander star Caitriona Balfe announced the death of her beloved cat Eddie online last night. The 41-year-old actress said the pet had been her “constant companion” for 17 years and had travelled with her from America to Scotland, where she films the popular Starz show.

In her heartfelt tribute, Caitriona revealed her cat was an unlikely fan of Indian food and had the “greatest personality,” converting many people into cat lovers.

Her post began: “It’s with a heavy heart that I share that I’ve had to say goodbye to my little love Eddie.

“She has been my constant companion for 17 years… from NY to LA and the Glasgow,”(sic) she informed her 1.4 million followers.

Revealing a little bit more about her four-legged friend, the actress went on to say: “She had the greatest personality. Converted many ‘I don’t like cats’ person, she loved people, sleep and food… she could always find the warmest spot in the house and loved to sunbathe.”

Grateful for their time together she went on to thank those who had looked after her over the years.

“I will be forever grateful for the years I got to share with her and a huge thanks you to her many sitters who showered her with love, Jess, Marnie, Simon… and everyone else who loved her.

“I hope she’s resting somewhere great with all the Pho or Indian food she can eat… (the girl loved a curry!!)” Catriona signed off, adding four broken heart emojis.

Instagram followers and fans rushed to the comments section to share their condolences including fellow cat-owner Holly Willoughby.

The This Morning presenter wrote beside the adorable picture of Eddie sitting in the sink: “So sorry…. it’s heartbreaking.”

Outlander co-star Lauren Lyle, who plays Marsali MacKimmie in the television drama, added: “Aw Cait I’m sorry. Eddie was a diamond x.”

While Nell Hudson, also known as Laoghaire MacKenzie in the show, wrote: “I’m so sorry. Losing our pets is the most painful thing. What a privilege it is to have them.”

“Oh Balfe- I’m so sorry to hear Eddie has made her grand exit. I suppose I was one of those non cat people who she had charmed. I know how much she will be missed. Sending you loads of love,” added her friend, American actress Jessica Lindsey.
