Chris Hemsworth Almost Played G.I. Joe Before He Was Cast as Thor

Chris Hemsworth has played Thor, God of Thunder, for almost a decade in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It’s pretty impossible to imagine anybody else in that role (although Natalie Portman will be taking on the mantle in the forthcoming Thor: Love and Thunder). But according to the man himself, the course of superhero cinema almost ran in an entirely different direction.

In a recent interview with GQ Australia, Hemsworth revealed that he auditioned for roles in two other action franchises prior to getting the role that would eventually make him a household name. He tried out for Fox’s reboot of the X-Men movies, which would have seen him playing a Marvel character, albeit one outside of the MCU (no word on which mutant he was auditioning for).

He also read for the part of Conrad S. Hauser, the lead in 2009’s G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra. Of course, that role went to Channing Tatum, leaving Hemsworth thoroughly disheartened… until Marvel came calling.

“I had seven or eight call backs and I thought one of those was going to land,” he said. “But then neither of them did and all of a sudden I thought: this is it, I’ve missed it again. But then Thor came along. If I had got one of those previous roles I wouldn’t have got Thor.”

The rest, as they say, is history. Hemsworth has played Thor in three standalone movies and four Avengers movies (not to mention an extended, hilarious cameo in Doctor Strange), and credits director Taika Waititi with helping to keep the character fresh and engaging, both for audiences and for him as an actor.

“He’s insanely fun,” he said. “But don’t mistake that child-like, frantic energy for someone who isn’t prepared. That’s quite a unique combination, that he has the ability to, through humour, put you at ease, but is also armed with all the knowledge that a director needs to lead you through the process. And it came at a time when I desperately wanted there to be more humour to the character.”

Hemsworth and Waititi will be working together once again on Thor: Love and Thunder, which is currently set to start shooting in August.
