Samantha Womack, 48, has revealed she was left “traumatised” after appearing in Eurovision back in the early 90s. The EastEnders actress began her career by representing England in the contest with her performance of A Message To Your Heart.

It was crazy

Samantha performed back in March 1991 aged 18, when she won the annual A Song for Europe competition to represent the United Kingdom in the Eurovision Song Contest.

She finished joint tenth and the song, A Message to Your Heart, peaked at number 30 on the UK Singles Chart.

Speaking on the experience with Zoe Ball on her BBC Radio 2 show, Samantha said: “I just always remember that era as being kind of breaking into ladette culture, you know everything just seems a bit loud, crazy and mad. Eurovision was definitely all of those things.

“I can look back at it now and love the idea I did it, we did Top Of The Pops, we toured everywhere.

“It was crazy, mad but I think after it finished I was a bit traumatised for a while,” she admitted.

The actress has previously said that her failure in the contest devastated her at the time and thought it would spell the end of her career.

She has also called her appearance “ridiculous”, in that she was dressed in a pink mini-dress while singing about starving children.

Samantha went on to develop her love of acting, appearing in episodes of The Bill and Press Gang.

In 2007 it was announced that she would be joining EastEnders as Ronnie Mitchell, a cousin of the well known Mitchell brothers.

She then quit the show in 2011 when her character was sent to prison, before returning in 2013 and leaving again in 2017.

Elsewhere, the star recently shared how she’s found love again after secretly splitting with her ex-husband Mark Womack.

Samantha is now dating her new man, former Coronation Street star Oliver Farnworth.

When she split up with Mark, she remained living in their home, a farmhouse in Bedfordshire with their kids, while dating other people.

At the time, Sam, 49, said she was happy to stay in the same house as Mark and their kids Benjamin, 20, and 16-year-old Lili Rose.

She had also been step-mum to Mark’s son Michael, 25, from a previous relationship.

“But now feels like the right time to be honest and admit we’re no longer together,” Sam continued.

Sam and Mark met in 1998 but didn’t marry until 2009 and split in 2018.

Her new man Oliver played Andy Carver in Corrie from 2014 to 2017.

The couple met when they worked together on a stage adaptation of the Paula Hawkins novel The Girl On The Train in 2018, but found love in lockdown last year.

A source told The Sun: “Samantha’s chemistry with Oliver was clear to see on stage and they remained close after the production.

“They couldn’t be happier and have loved dating away from the public eye.”
