Meghan Markle struggled with royal life thanks to familys decades-old rule
Meghan Markle found royal life “very difficult” because of theQueen Mother’s “well-worn mantra”, an expert said.
The Duchess of Sussex, 41, rose to fame playingRachel Zane in US legal drama Suits and her celebrity background meant she had freedom to express herself as she wished – often through her now defunct social media blog, The Tig.
But, on becoming a member of the BritishRoyal Family after marryingPrince Harry at Windsor Castle in 2018, she began to struggle with having to remain silent – even in the face of intense public scrutiny.
Members of The Firm tend to adhere to the Queen Mother’s mantra of "never complain, never explain", and that caused Meghan some difficulties, according to royal commentator Victoria Arbiter.
Speaking toNine News Australia in 2019, she said: "It's very difficult when you come from a celebrity background where a publicist can stand up for you or come out and say 'no, that report is categorically untrue’.
"But, generally speaking, members of the family follow the Queen Mother's well-worn mantra: 'Never complain, never explain.' And so you have to sit back while the world's media and social media just comment."
Meghan and Prince Harry, 38,stepped back from senior royal duties in 2020 after struggling to cope with life in The Firm – eventually settling inMontecito,California.
Since moving away, the Sussexes have opened up on royal life – initially in thecontroversial interview they gave to Oprah Winfrey in 2021.
That was followed by theirNetflix documentary in December last year – whichlevelled a fresh round of damning claims against the monarchy.
Then came Harry’s bombshell bookSpare – which brought anew round of attacks on the Royal Family – with criticism directed towardsPrince William,Kate Middleton,King Charles andQueen Consort Camilla.
Among the most explosive allegations in the book was one claim thatWilliam attacked Harry in a row over Meghan.
Harry also claimed that the Prince and Princess of Wales encouraged him to wear hisinfamous Nazi uniform to a 2005 fancy dress party.
Meanwhile, the Queen Mother – Elizabeth Angela Marguerite Bowes-Lyon – is said to have had a much closer relationship with William than she did with Harry.
William would be invited round for tea with his great-grandmother but Harry was often snubbed, it has been reported.
Journalist Richard Kay, speaking in Channel 5 documentary Prince Harry: The Troubled Prince, said: "The Queen Mother always made sure Prince William was seated in a prominent seat next to her and Harry never was.”
However, despite that, it has been claimed that the Queen Mother put a large amount of her money into a trust fund for her great-grandchildren,with Harry getting more than William.
The move was said to be an acknowledgement that William would benefit financially from becoming King.
The Queen Mother died in March 2002 at the age of 101.
