Rumours have been rife since Daniel Craig confirmed he would be turning in his gun after the newest film in the James Bond franchise is released. No Time to Die is set to air later this year, and amongst the big stars all tipped to take on the tux – such as Tom Hardy, Idris Elba and James Norton – Outlander’s Sam Heughan shines bright.
It was surreal. He’s a character we’ve all grown up with
And it’s a role that’s all too familiar to the actor, who admitted he has actually auditioned for the part before.
In a recent interview, he described the experience as “surreal” and “incredible”.
“I met Barbara Broccoli and Martin Campbell [the director of Casino Royale],” he recalled.
“I did a scene and they had the gun from The Man with the Golden Gun on the table and I remember thinking, ‘Wow, this is incredible’.
“It was surreal. He’s a character we’ve all grown up with.”
Current lothario Craig, was cast in 2006 and has starred in five sequels since.
But following the series of successful movies that have revitalised the nearly 60-year-old phenomenon, he believes “someone else needs to have a go” as he prepares to end his 15-year run.
And now the opportunity to try out for the character has arisen again, Heughan teased he wouldn’t shrug off the idea.
“I don’t think any actor would ever say no,” he laughed.
“If I was asked to audition for it, I would be delighted.”
The 40-year-old rose to fame by playing the lead role in cult TV series Outlander; a show which combines time travel and historical drama in one.
His character Jamie Fraser has acquired a very enthusiastic fanbase and the star revealed he has received some rather odd gifts over the years from avid viewers.

“I’ve had a variety of strange and wonderful things over the years,” he looked back.
“I got sent a crate of avocados, I got a blanket with my face all over it – a group of women had sewn it together.
He continued to tell Radio Times: “When I take my clothes off [on the show] I have to wear a modesty pouch and a generous lady crocheted me one!”
