This Is England’s Thomas Turgoose reveals co-star Stephen Graham and director Shane Meadows offered to adopt him after his mother’s death
This Is England’s child star Thomas Turgoose revealed co-star Stephen Graham and director Shane Meadows offered to adopt him after his mother died from cancer.
Thomas, 29, first met Stephen on set of the hit film in 2006, directed by Shane, where he played Shaun Fields, a teenager who is taken under the wing of a group of skinheads in the 80s.
Sadly, his mother Sharon died before the film hit the big screen in 2007 and she was never able to watch his incredible performance at just 13 years old.

Speaking on the Private Parts podcast, hosted by Made in Chelsea’s Jamie Laing and Francis Boulle, Thomas said: ‘My mum passed away from lung cancer after I finished filming This Is England. She never got to see the finished film.
‘Shane Meadows dedicated the film to my mum. Stephen Graham promised my mum he’d look out for me. Everyone involved in This is England are family to me.’
Her death also meant he was forced to live with his father who he barely knew and Stephen, who played Combo in the film, and director Shane stepped in and offered to adopt him if living with his father ‘didn’t work out’.
Stephen married actress Hannah Walters in 2008 and they have two children together, a son, Alfie, and a daughter, Grace.
Meanwhile Shane has two sons Arty, 12, and Louie, nine, with his wife Joanne.

Child star Thomas has an extremely close bond with his former colleagues from the show, who he describes as family, and often shares pictures of his memories with the cast.
Many of them were also present at his wedding to his wife Charlotte Revell in 2018, including Stephen and Line of Duty’s Vicky McClure – who played Lol in the franchise.
Speaking candidly on the podcast, he also revealed that his life could have taken a very different path if he had not landed the role.
‘I was destined for prison. Shoplifting things I didn’t need,’ he said. ‘There was a hardware store in Grimsby that I used to steal spray paint from for no reason.’
After his wedding on New Years Eve 2018 Turgoose and his former co-stars shared snaps of the heartfelt event and he continues to do so – sharing his last confetti-filled picture in April.
