Susanna Reid gets apology from GMB co-host after gift leads to ‘unintended consequences’

GMB: Piers Morgan jokes about Charlotte Hawkins' 'talent'

Susanna Reid, 50, received a pink face covering from her colleague Charlotte Hawkins, that showed a finger pressed to a set of lips with the words “shhh” inscribed on it. However, the Good Morning Britain presenter soon received a cheeky quip from co-host Piers Morgan over the “phallic” design of the mask.

Sorry Susanna

The outspoken journalist pulled on a mask emblazoned with the words “wake up” – the title of his new book – while Susanna, who has been nicknamed “pouty”, wore her gift from Charlotte in the latest instalment.

Turning to look at his co-host’s choice of mask, Piers responded: “I don’t think you should be wearing that.

“That looks a little phallic to me!”

However, Susanna protested: “It’s a finger!”

On Twitter Charlotte later explained that her thoughtful gift to Susanna had been misconstrued.

She typed: ”Oops sorry ⁦@susannareid100 it seems my Christmas present idea of humorous facemasks ⁩has had unintended consequences… “

Underneath viewers shared their thoughts on the divisive face covering.

Carol Vorderman typed: “It was, lovely Charlotte, my first thought too through weary eyes this morning.”

While another simply replied: “Oh my.”

Later in the programme, Piers heaped praise on Charlotte’s daughter Ella Rose, following an adorable video of her singing Jingle Bells.

The five-year-old got into the festive spirit as she encouraged the audience to sing along with her in the sweet footage.

Ella said to the camera: “Now I’m going to sing a song so you’re all going to join in in three, two, one…” before she launched into the song.

Piers and Susanna both gushed over the video.

Speaking to Charlotte via video link, Piers joked: “Do you know what? Finally, we’ve got some talent from that family. She can properly sing. She even looks like Shirley Temple.”

Charlotte shares Ella with her husband Mark Herbert, with the couple marrying in 2008 after five years together.

In 2018, the presenter, who gave birth to Ella when she was 39, spoke out on the difficulty of conceiving.

She explained to the Mirror: “We tried for a few years, and I’d got to the stage where I was worried because it just wasn’t happening.

“It was a stressful time but I still look at her now and am amazed at the fact that we created this little being.

“It still sometimes scares me thinking how different our life would have been if we hadn’t had her.”

Charlotte and her husband almost went down the route of IVF before they fell pregnant.
