The Weeknd confirmed to headline Super Bowl halftime show in 2021
The Weeknd has been confirmed as the next headliner for the Super Bowl halftime show in 2021.
The Blinding Lights singer, 30, is following in the footsteps of huge stars like Beyoncé, Jennifer Lopez, Justin Timberlake and Lady Gaga, and will grace the stage for the Pepsi LV halftime show next year.
It’s been revealed that the Super Bowl will take place at the Raymond James Stadium in Tampa Bay, Florida, and will fans be treated to a halftime spectacle from none other than The Weeknd himself.
He had fans all riled up on Instagram after teasing something big was coming, before confirming his headline slot on Thursday.
Sharing an official image of him ahead of his halftime show, The Weeknd told his followers: ‘performing on the iconic stage. see you 02/07/21 @pepsi #pepsihalftime #SBLV.’
Fans went wild for The Weeknd’s announcement, with many sharing their excitement over his upcoming performance.
‘THIS IS BIG, CONGRATS KING,’ commented one eager fan, while another said: ‘NO WAYYYYYY YESSSS.’
‘OMG IVE ALWAYS WANTED U TO DO THIS,’ posted another follower, as one more said: ‘Let’s goooo.’
The Super Bowl halftime show 2021 will be put together by Pepsi, the NFL and Jay-Z’s Roc Nation, with Pepsi’s Vice President of Sport, Entertainment and Media stating: ‘We can’t wait to welcome multi-award winning artist The Weeknd to the Pepsi Super Bowl LV Halftime Show stage.
‘In collaboration with the NFL and Roc Nation, we continue to reimagine what a Pepsi Halftime Show looks like with some of the biggest musicians in the world. We expect The Weeknd will continue to raise the bar, setting a new precedent both musically and visually for the most-watched performance of the year.’
Variety reports that Roc Nation chief Jay-Z has promised fans something ‘extraordinary’ from The Weeknd in 2021, as he championed his fellow artist.
‘The Weeknd has introduced a sound all his own. His soulful uniqueness has defined a new generation of greatness in music and artistry,’ Jay-Z said.
‘This is an extraordinary moment in time and the Pepsi Super Bowl LV Halftime Show is going to be an extraordinary experience with an extraordinary performer.’
The Weeknd is definitely going to have big shoes to fill, as Jennifer Lopez and Shakira knocked it out the park with their jaw-dropping halftime performance, earlier this year.
Both stars shared the stage, with Shakira delivering hits like Hips Don’t Lie and Whenever, Wherever, and Jennifer throwing it back to her early days droppings tracks like Jenny From The Block and Love Don’t Cost A Thing.
She even gave a performance inspired by her role in pole-dancing flick Hustlers and teamed up with Shakira for a spell-binding finale of Let’s Get Loud.
The Super Bowl 2021 is set take place on February 7.
