Chelsea 'chasing transfer for West Brom whizkid Leonardo Cardoso, 16, before he signs first pro contract'

CHELSEA are interested in signing West Brom wonderkid Leonardo Cardoso, according to reports.

Cardoso, 16, is highly rated by the Baggies but is yet to sign a professional contract due to his age.

That could allow Chelsea to swoop in and offer him terms once he turns 17 next May, according to Football Insider.

The report also suggests other clubs could join the race for Cardoso, who has impressed at youth level for West Brom.

Cardoso's form has seen him called up by both Portgual and England at youth level.

As such, the Blues are reportedly working on luring the midfielder to Stamford Bridge.

The midfielder could follow a similar path to Billy Gilmour, another midfielder who moved to Chelsea from Rangers before ever making a senior appearance for Gers.

Gilmour broke through the ranks at Chelsea in 2019-20, as did Mason Mount and Tammy Abraham, with Ruben Loftus-Cheek graduating from the academy prior to that.

Thomas Tuchel has looked to hand his youngsters more opportunities this season, with Trevoh Chalobah impressing in defence.

It seems the German is still keen to add to his defensive options however, with Juventus star Matthijs De Light heavily linked with a move to Chelsea.

Long-term transfer target Jules Kounde still remains an option too after Sevilla rejected the Blues' approaches for him last summer.
