Commercial burglaries in New York City have more than doubled from mid-March to mid-April as thieves prey on both the stores forced to close amid the novel coronavirus pandemic and the "essential businesses" allowed to remain open.
From March 12 through April 19, the New York Police Department recorded 612 commercial burglaries – a 122 percent increase from 2019, which saw 275 commercial burglaries during the same period, an NYPD spokesperson told FOX Business.
“Burglaries are driven by recidivists, and they are exploiting the pandemic for their personal gain,” said Chief Michael LiPetri, who heads the department’s Office of Crime Control Strategies.
