Eid al-Fitr is a religious holiday celebrated by Muslims around the world as the month of Ramadan ends. At the time of writing, Ramadan is still being observed, featuring fasting during daylight hours and prayers said throughout the day.

Ramadan is the holiest month in the Islamic calendar and is considered a period when Muslims attempt to grow spiritually and build stronger relationships with Allah and loved ones.

Ramadan celebrations have this year been disrupted due to lockdown in much of the world in attempts to prevent further spread of the coronavirus pandemic.

This has seen services at mosques, mass meals to break the fast and the cancellation of religious events due to the COVID-19 crisis.

Muslims have consequently taken to praying at home, restricting the sharing of food with immediate family only and participating in special services via live streams.

When is Eid al-Fitr?

The Festival of Eid al-Fitr is celebrated when Ramadan comes to an end.

This year, Eid al-Fitr kicks-off in the evening of Saturday, May 23, and ends in the evening of Sunday, May 24.

Eid marks the end of the dawn to sunset fasting of Ramadan and is typically celebrated with delicious feasts, the sharing of gifts and enjoying the company of friends and family.

However, with coronavirus lockdown measures remaining in place, Eid celebrations might feel very different this year.

Because social gatherings are banned, video and voice calls via chat platforms like WhatsApp will likely take centre stage.

How to reply to Eid Mubarak:

If someone says “Eid Mubarak” to you, it is polite to respond by saying “Khair Mubarak”.

Khair means “goodness” and so this wishes goodwill on the person who greeted you.

You could also say “JazakAllah Khair”, meaning “thank you” and translates as “May Allah reward you with goodness.”
