She used her fame for good, putting taboo subjects in the spotlight and campaigning for the greater good.
And while Princess Diana's tragic death meant she never met her two daughter in laws, both Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton both work to keep her memory alive in small but meaningful ways.
From naming their daughter's in her honour, to reflecting her once boundary pushing style in their own choice of clothes, the two have each subtly honoured their mother-in-law.
One way in which Diana's memory is brought to life by her daughter-in-laws is their use of her jewellery, inherited by sons William and Harry.
Both Kate and Meghan regularly wear pieces that hold special memories for those who knew and loved the Princess.
Princess Diana’s engagement ring
Probably the most iconic piece of jewellery that belonged to Princess Diana was her beautiful sapphire and diamond engagement ring which Prince Charles proposed with on 3 February, 1991 at Windsor Castle just after a few months after dating.
History repeated itself when Prince William popped the question to Kate on October 20, 2010 using the same ring in a sweet tribute to his late mother. The Duchess can been seen wearing this ring daily as a sweet memory to her Mother-In-Law.
Aquamarine cocktail ring
Another ring which this time has been worn by Meghan is the gorgeous aqua cocktail ring.
She wore the showstopper after getting changed into her second look on her wedding day in May 2018.
The ring hadn’t been seen since 1997 when Diana last wore it to a Christie’s pre-auction party to celebrate her selling some of her best outfits.
The piece belonged to Princess Diana and was said to have been commissioned by her in 1996 following her divorce from Prince Charles.
The Lover’s Knot Tiara
Moving on to Kate’s most favourite tiara that she has been pictured many times wearing. The Lover’s Knot Tiara consists of diamonds and 38 drop-shaped pearls, set in silver and gold.
Events Kate has worn the priceless piece include the banquet in honour of President Trump's state visit to the U.K in June 2019 to many of the annual diplomatic receptions at Buckingham Palace.
This tiara became most memorable for being one of Princess Diana’s favourite's as she sported it on many occasions, such as when she visited the Culture Centre in Hong Kong in 1989 in the famous Catherine Walker white pearl dress.

Diana’s Gold Bangle
Diana owned a gorgeous gold bangle that was open ended with two blue stones and now it seems that Meghan is the proud owner.
We have seen her sport the heirloom once to launch her Smart Works charity clothing collection launch in September 2019 and previously during The Royal tour of Australia in 2018 in which she attended with Prince Harry.
Blue sapphire earrings
Princess Diana also owned a pair of fabulous sapphire and diamond drop earrings that perfectly matched her engagement ring.
We recently saw these on the ears of The Duchess of Cambridge when she stepped out to launch her own Centre for Early Childhood on June 18.
However, Kate gave them a little tweak by removing the bottom section of the earrings so they would become a pair of sparkly studs that she could wear on many occasions.
Many of Princess Diana’s jewels haven’t been seen since her untimely death so we can’t see what else her daughter-in-laws bring back as they continue to keep Diana's memory alive.
