Cast iron skillets are one of the best ways to cook food because they heat evenly, whether on your stovetop or in the oven. Cleaning cast iron can be notoriously difficult because, in essence, these pans should never be washed clean, as it removes all the special elements of these pans.

How to clean a cast-iron skillet

Tools:

  • Paper towels
  • Water water
  • A small amount of soap
  • Vegetable oil
  • Nonmetal brush or non-abrasive scrub pad.

Method:

You should clean your cast iron skillet after every use.

To clean this pan, you should wipe the interior surface of a still-warm skillet with paper towels to remove any excess food and oil.

Next, rinse the skillet under hot running water and scrub it with a non-metal brush or non-abrasive scrub pad to remove any traces of food.

You can use a small amount of soap if you wish, but avoid using too much as it may strip the surface of its oils.

After you have dried the skillet thoroughly, you should then heat it over a medium-low heat until all traces of moisture have evaporated.

Next, add half a teaspoon of oil to the pan.

Using paper towels, lightly coat the interior surface of your pan with oil.

Continue to wipe the surface of your skillet with oiled paper towels until it looks dark and smooth with no leftover residue.

Let your pan cool completely before you put it away.

How to remove rust from a cast-iron skillet

You should use a non-metallic scrubber to remove rust from your pan.

Wash the dish with mild soap and rinse it well.

Dry the skillet with a clean towel and then re-season the surface by coating its interior and exterior with vegetable oil.

How to season a cast-iron skillet

To season a skillet effectively you should repeat the oil application three to five times.

You should make sure oil smokes each time, but also allow the pan to cool slightly before the next application.

You can also season a skillet in the oven by rubbing a cloth soaked in vegetable oil across the entire surface of the pan.

Heat the pan upside down in your oven for an hour and then turn off the oven.

Let the cast iron skillet cool down completely in the oven before putting it away or trying to use it.

How to test if your cast iron skillet is well-seasoned

A well-seasoned skillet will have a dark, semi-glossy finish.

But the skillet will not be sticky or greasy to the touch.

The cast-iron skillet will not have any rust or any dull or dry patches.
