Van de Beek's injury is a miserable end to a disappointing season.
He made his £39million transfer from Ajax to Old Trafford last summer but has struggled in England.
Unable to dislodge Bruno Fernandes out of the No10 spot and less suited to a defensive midfield role, Van de Beek made just 19 Premier League appearances – four as a starter.
His only goal came in the defeat on the opening day of the season against Crystal Palace and the one assist was at home to Burnley in April.
