Miley Cyrus Says She's Done With Drugs

Miley Cyrus is no stranger to talking about her past drug use and her wild child days. Just last month, for example, she told Rick Owens about how she once “bought weed wax from a guy in a van in front of a taco shop” in San Bernardino and saw what she believes was a UFO.
But now, while she’s celebrating the release of her seventh studio album, a glam-rock record called Midnight Sky, Cyrus claims that those days of getting so high she might see aliens are over. In a new interview with Rolling Stone, the musician candidly explained her decision to get sober, jumpstarted by a fear of joining the 27 club. “Like a lot of people during the pandemic, I fell off,” she revealed, referring to drinking alcohol. However, the 28-year-old said she has not used drugs in years and doesn’t plan to in the future. “I never try to, again, be a fortune-teller. I try to not be naive. Things fucking happen. But from sitting here with you right now, I would say it would have to be a cold day in hell for me to relapse on drugs,” she said, noting a possible exception for mushrooms.
She also added that in the past she has taken ayahuasca, a psychedelic South American brew that produces intense hallucinations (and also vomiting and possibly diarrhea). Many people, when led by a shaman, claim to reach profound insights after consuming the substance, and Cyrus says she is amongst them. “The shaman said people take ayahuasca three, four times, sometimes 30 times before they have the kind of trip I had,” she explained. “I saw the snakes right away, and the snakes come and grab you and take you to the Mama Aya, and she walks you through your whole trip, and it was pretty crazy. I loved it, though.”
“Right now I have been focusing on sobriety as I wanted to wake up 100 percent, 100 percent of the time,” she explained in the interview. “I’m really good at quitting things. I have a weed machine right here. I’ve never smoked out of it and it’s full. [If[ I had a cocaine machine, it might not be full. That’s the ting. I’m really not an addict. You can have that. You’re good. To me, fun is any time I eel like I really display or really reach my full potential.”
The musician looked back on early 2018, after she released her album Younger Now and was still in a relationship with her longtime partner Liam Hemsworth, and decried any public notion of “purity” in her life. “It looked like I was living some fairy tale. It really wasn’t,” she went on, claiming that “At that time, my experimentation with drugs and booze and the circle of people around me was not fulfilling or sustainable or ever going to get me to my fullest potential and purpose.”
“I want to get fucked up and live life to the fullest,” Cyrus said, “But is it really living life to the fullest if you can’t remember [anything]? ‘Live fast die, young’ isn’t really the goal.”
