Mum lets baby chew on rocks, sand and sticks as she ‘does not fear bacteria’

An American mum has taken to video app TikTok to explain why she lets her baby chew on dirt, sand and rocks.

People had questioned the mum in the comments about why she’s OK with her child chewing on things which most of us view as unsanitary.

Alice Bender, 22, documents her child rearing on the account Coming Up Fern.

Her son, named Fern, is in a vegan household in Arizona and is allowed to chow down on the dirty items because him mum does “not fear bacteria”.

The videos of the baby sucking on rocks and shopping trolley handles will shock many – especially during the coronavirus pandemic.

Alice claims it’s only recently that anyone has seen an issue in what her son puts his mouth on

She said: “I do not fear bacteria.

“In fact, I welcome it.

“I trust nature and I trust my baby.

“It is not a coincidence babies have this instinct when they are breastfeeding.”

From around three months of age children ofter practice “baby mouthing” where they explore the world using their mouth.

This means mums and dads are often seen snatching dirty items, bugs and other random objects away from their babies mouths.

But, some parents like Alice believe that it helps children to develop a robust immune system.

In the TikTok clip Alice also referred to the “allopathic industry”.

She said: “In the last couple hundred years the allopathic industry has taken the world by storm.

“This did not happen by accident, it happened after a series of billion-dollar campaigns intended to shift the public’s perspective on health.”

Allopathy refers to science-based, modern medicine rather than alternative medicine or homeopathy.

The video was viewed more than 12 million times and a roaring debate began in the comments.
