Royal Expert Claims Meghan Markle Made Prince Harry 'Resentful' About Prince William's Reputation
Prince Harry and Prince William had very different personalities growing up and media stories would often paint Harry as the “party boy” and William as much more serious. Royal biographer Robert Lacey believes that Meghan, Duchess of Sussex made Prince Harry “resentful” about how his brother’s reputation had always been more respectable than his.
Did Meghan Markle make Prince Harry resentful of Prince William?
Lacey, who wrote the book Battle of Brothers: William, Harry and the Inside Story of A Family in Tumult, claimed that both brothers had their wild times when they were younger but that Prince Harry was treated more unfairly than his brother.
Lacey told Vanity Fair, “One of the things that I dwell on in the book is how in their teens and going back to their childhood they were aware they were on different paths.”
“When Harry was a little boy playing up his nanny told him off for misbehaving and he said ‘I don’t have to behave I’m not going to be king,”’ he continued.
By comparison, Prince William “knew from the age of 6 what lay ahead and that he was different. He and William both misbehaved but Harry was blamed for everything,” the author claimed.
According to Lacey, Prince Harry “became resentful of the stereotyping in the media. I think Meghan helped him to see the injustice of that, put it in words and react against it. Her arrival was a crucial moment.”
The princes assumed different roles even as children
Prince Harry might have been judged more critically by the media, but Lacey maintains that Prince William was jealous of the reputation that Harry had as a “loveable rogue.”
In speaking with ET about his book, Lacey explained how he wanted to dive into the princes’ childhoods, “to see the way in which their lives were shaped, cruelly really, by the breakdown of their parents’ marriage and by the royal roles and distortion that was placed upon them.”
Lacey shared how the boys’ personalities played into the media and public perception of William and Harry. “You know, I describe how when they were born, it was William who was the rambunctious character and it was Harry who was the good little boy who sucked his thumb,” he explained. “Then William discovers that he’s going to be king, he becomes much more serious and quiet between the age of six or seven. Harry goes the other way.”
Prince William was reportedly jealous of Prince Harry’s reputation
Lacey further believes that Prince William may have been jealous of his brother’s reputation. “I talked to Ken Wolf, who was the bodyguard to Harry and William when they were little boys,” Lacey explained. “And he said how William was always sort of jealous of the lovable rogue reputation that Harry had and the affection that he generated.”
“And there is certainly a school of thought that William and [his wife] Kate were not happy at the way in which these royal rock stars, Harry and Meghan, overshadowed them, and that they’re quite happy now to have seen them out of the country,” Lacey added.
