Tadao Ando's Bourse de Commerce Redesign in Paris Announces Opening
The opening of Tadao Ando’s redesign of the Bourse de Commerce in Paris has been announced. Formerly Paris’ stock exchange, the Bourse, with its regal dome structure and historical murals, has been transformed for business mogul François Pinault and his Pinault Collection.
Ando took on the original structure of the Bourse and embedded his signature brutalist design to the site. He added a cylindrical three-tiered formation to the space’s central rotunda to create extra room for exhibitions. The building’s massive glass ceiling casts natural light onto the open space for a calming ambience while features like a large foyer, an auditorium and a theater accompany the site to host artful performances and video installations. In a statement, Pinault expressed his enthusiasm for the Bourse’s reopening: “Not only will [the opening] add to the European landscape of institutions devoted to presenting contemporary art, but after the difficult year experienced by France and the world in 2020, it will contribute to the renaissance of the Parisian cultural sphere.” It’s worth noting that this isn’t the first time Ando and Pinault have worked together; the two have taken on such endeavors as the Palazzo Grassi and Venice’s Punta della Dogana.
The new Tadao Ando-designed Bourse de Commerce in Paris will be opening on 23 January 2021.
