This is how Blackpink really got their name

When it comes to Blackpink, there are quite a few tidbits of trivia related to the names the well-known ladies use. While you may know these K-pop sensations as Jennie, Jisoo, Lisa, and Rosé, these women weren’t born with a single moniker.

Jennie and Jisoo both use their real names, however, according to Stylecaster, the longer versions are actually Kim Jennie and Kim Jisoo. Lisa’s full name is Lalisa (Pranpriya) Manoban, which she shortens to just Lisa. And while Rosé’s real name is Park Chae Young, she adjusted her English name, Roseanne, to come up with the version she uses as a famous singer.

While that’s all surely interesting to hardcore and newbie K-pop fans alike, you’re also likely wondering about the group’s name as a whole. And we don’t blame you! It’s undeniably catchy, memorable, and just plain cool! But that’s not necessarily what inspired the moniker. Read on to find out why these ladies go by Blackpink.

Blackpink might mean more than you think

Some may tell you that the name of the group behind hits like “Kill This Love” and “DDU-DU DDU-DU” is Blackpink, which is true. However, at the same time, others might prefer to write the name as BLACKPINK — all caps, obviously, which aptly seems to emphasize the stature of the act. And Refinery29 notes that you can also stylize the name as BLΛƆKPIИK, which is clearly slightly different and super cool!

When it comes to the significance of the name, Allkpop reported in 2016 that a representative from the group’s label, YG Entertainment explained that “[t]he meaning of Blackpink aims to contradict the common perception of the color pink.” The rep noted that while “[p]ink is commonly used to portray prettiness, … Blackpink actually means to say that ‘Pretty isn’t everything.'”

Beyond that, the two colors that are mentioned in the name are meant to reflect the dual nature of the group. That is, the fact that Blackpink is “a team that encompasses not only beauty, but also great talent.” Blinks — which is what the stars’ collective fans are called if you’re interested in yet another name-related fact about the group — would surely agree that the name is perfectly appropriate when you consider this reasoning.
