Vitamin D is crucial for the body, as it helps to keep your bones, teeth and muscles healthy. You could be at risk of a deficiency if you start to lose your hair without any obvious explanation.
During the winter months, when daylight hours are reduced, it may be difficult to get all of the vitamin D you need from sunlight.
Without enough vitamin D – which is also known as the ‘sunshine’ vitamin – it’s difficult to regulate the amount of calcium and phosphate in the body.
A severe lack of vitamin D may even lead to bone deformities, rickets, or osteomalacia.
But, it’s not always easy to know if you’re at risk of the condition, as the symptoms can be very sneaky.
Hair loss has been linked to lower levels of vitamin D, according to nutritionist Franziska Spritzler.
Specifically, you may be more at risk of alopecia areata if you have a deficiency, she said.
Alopecia areata is a type of autoimmune condition, which is where the immune system mistakenly attacks part of its own body.
Applying a vitamin D-rich cream directly to the scalp may help to reduce hair loss, if you already have a deficiency.

“Most people don’t realise that they’re deficient, as symptoms are generally subtle,” said the nutritionist.
She wrote for medical website Healthline: “When hair loss is severe, it may be the result of a disease or nutrient deficiency.
“Low vitamin D levels are linked to alopecia areata and may be a risk factor for developing the disease.
“One study in people with alopecia areata showed that lower vitamin D blood levels tended to be associated with a more severe hair loss.”
But just because you start losing your hair, it doesn’t necessarily mean that you have a vitamin D deficiency.
Hair loss can be a natural part of the ageing process, and most of the time, it’s nothing to worry about.
Losing your hair could be caused by a number of different conditions, said the NHS.
Stress, weight loss, or even an iron deficiency can lead to some form of hair loss.
You could lower your risk of a deficiency by making a few diet or lifestyle swaps.
The best food sources of vitamin D include oily fish, eggs, mushrooms, and some fortified products.
You could also top up on vitamin D by spending more time in direct sunlight. The sun prompts the body to naturally produce vitamin D3.
It’s recommended that everyone takes a 10mcg vitamin D supplement during the autumn and winter months to prevent a deficiency.
