Windows 10 users that have downloaded recent updates from Microsoft could be facing a nightmare scenario. There are major reported issues with the recently released January 2021 and February 2021 updates for Windows 10. These patches are also known as KB4598299 and KB4598301 and are specifically for Windows 10 machines running the 20H2 update, versions 1909 and 2004.

Following the release of these patches Windows 10 users have reported all sorts of issues on the Microsoft Forums and on Reddit.

As reported by Windows Latest, Windows 10 users have reported numerous app crashes after installing these patches.

In terms of specific apps, one affected user said they were unable to use Visual Studio 2019 after installing KB4598299.

The user wrote: “In Visual Studio 2019, I performed the traditional window drag to relocate the Properties Window to be docked with the Solutions window [and] Visual Studio crashed. Uninstalling KB4598299 on both computers fixed the problem”.

Microsoft announce the Windows 10 update

While on Reddit another Windows 10 user posted: “Am in need of help, every time I clean temp internet files using Windows 10 disk cleanup utility and restart the PC my search bar when I left click into type here to search the panel opens and I get a blue loading circle and I have formatted my SSD replaced my hardware and I can replicate the issue again and again even on a fresh clean install”.

Microsoft has since confirmed that a fix for the issues with KB4598301 is currently in the works.

The Windows 10 makers said: “A fix for this issue has been internally implemented and is being prepared for release. We’ll update you once it becomes available for download.”

While elsewhere Windows 10 users that have installed KB4598242 and KB4598229 said their device opened in automatic repair mode.

One affected user wrote: “I got an ‘Automatic Repair’ boot loop issue with this update on Lenovo T14 AMD. I have tracked down the issue to update KB4598229. Immediate boot failure and reset without any BSOD or any other error. It just boots me into the recovery environment after failing the last boot”.

Others said installing the patches resulted in their machines being stuck in a nightmarish Blue Screen of Death (BSoD) loop.

The user noted: “The system gets stuck in BSOD bad pool caller and the update needs to be rolled back before the system can boot properly. Windows keeps trying to install the update without success”.
