Samsung TV owners are being treated to a free software upgrade that’s set to bring a swathe of new content to the big screen in their living rooms. The South Korean firm has confirmed that its Samsung TV Plus service will now be available to all Smart TV owners.

This update bundles free live and on-demand content, including international news, sports and entertainment channels. The new content is completely separate from the vast library of streaming apps already available to Samsung Smart TV owners.

Samsung says that its TV Plus experience boasts a total of 80 live and on-demand TV channels. Best of all, it’s all completely free to watch. Channels available on Samsung TVs include Euronews Live, Fuel TV, Qwest and Movie Central alongside multiple Rakuten and Pluto channels.

It’s worth noting that all content arrives on the screen via an internet connection with no need for extra software downloads, subscriptions, or extra accessories like dongles or set-top boxes.

As you might imagine, a number of these channels are advert-supported, so there will be some commercial breaks. But if you’re short of things to watch and don’t fancy stumping up for a Netflix subscription, this could be a great alternative for Samsung Smart TV owners.

Alongside these new channels, there’s also an update to the on-screen look with the addition of a newly introduced ‘overlay bar’. Samsung says this updated design provides viewers with a brief summary of their most recently viewed channels, as well as top recommendations tailored to their viewing preferences.

From here, with a simple click, users can then gain quick and easy access to the Home Page and Channel Page. There’s even a ‘Continue Watching’ feature which allows viewers to jump back into the shows they’ve yet to finish.

“This is a proud moment for us at Samsung; as we continue to embrace innovation and enhance our customers’ user experience. We’re delighted to offer an exciting new upgrade to Samsung TV Plus, our free entertainment service. Samsung TV Plus is available on all Samsung Smart TVs from 2017 to 2020 offering diverse linear and on-demand content across the UK and multiple European territories,” said Gus Grimaldi, Head of Product Europe, Samsung Electronics UK Ltd.

News of this Samsung update comes as Sony also recently announced a big change to some of its TVs. Following in the footsteps of arch-rival Samsung, the Japanese firm is launching the popular Apple TV app across a number of its televisions, which not only means owners can watch all of their iTunes purchases and rentals, as well as stream all of the latest exclusive boxsets and movies from the Apple TV+ subscription service.
