Bald men at higher risk of having severe coronavirus, shocking new research suggests

Researchers believe the link is so strong that they have called for baldness to be listed as a risk factor called the ‘Gabrin sign’ This is after Dr Frank Gabrin, the first US physician to die of coronavirus, who was also bald. Lead author of the study, Professor Carlos Wambier of Brown University, told The Telegraph: “We really think that baldness is a perfect predictor of severity.”

Recently scientists have hypothesised that coronavirus is more deadlier for men due than women because of testosterone.

Italian doctors have previously found patients given androgen deprivation therapy, which radically cuts testosterone levels, were four times less likely to die from coronavirus.

A protein, TMPRSS2, is driven up by testosterone and scientists think the virus could use this protein to help it unlock cells.

Researchers at London’s Institute for Cancer Research are examining the link further, whilst the University of California, Los Angeles is looking at testosterone-blocking therapy to help with coronavirus treatment.

Testosterone can produce dihydrotestosterone (DHT) which can lead to hair loss.

Though as per South China Morning Post, it is possible to have low levels of testosterone but high levels of DHT.

The further data on baldness further raises the possibility that treatments that cut testosterone could be used to slow the virus down.

Discussions have taken place about a trial using baldness drugs to treat coronavirus.

A study of 122 patients in three Madrid hospitals found 79 percent of the men were bald.

Howard Soule, executive vice president at the Prostate Cancer Foundation, told Science Magazine: “Everybody is chasing a link between androgens and the outcome of Covid-19.”

Karen Stalbow, Head of Policy at Prostate Cancer UK, said: “There have been several recent pieces of research which indicate there may be a link between male hormones and increased risk of Covid-19.

“This has led some researchers to investigate whether hormone therapies commonly used to treat prostate cancer, such as enzalutamide, could reduce this risk.

“However, most of the research so far has been in the lab, and there is conflicting evidence over whether the hormone therapies have the same impact in the lungs as they would in prostate cells.

“There are now several clinical studies starting which hope to address these issues, but much more evidence is needed before we can know whether these hormone therapies would be an effective treatment for Covid-19.”

Professor Nick James of the Institute for Cancer Research has warned against using testosterone cutting treatment as a preventive measure due to their severe side effects.

He explained to the Mail on Sunday: “Being on these drugs is the male equivalent of going through the menopause.

“You would almost certainly cause more harm than good.”

According to the NHS, the following people are considered clinically extremely vulnerable: people who have had an organ transplant, people undergoing chemotherapy or antibody treatment for cancer, intense radiotherapy, cancer treatments which affect the immune system, people who have blood or bone marrow cancer, those have had a bone marrow or stem cell transplant in the previous six months, or are still taking immunosuppressant medicine, those with a severe lung condition, those with a condition which puts them at high risk of infection or taking medicines which makes them more likely to do so and expecting mothers with heart conditions.

The list of people are considered at moderate risk includes: Those over 70, expecting mothers, those who have lung conditions which are not severe, those with heart disease, diabetics, those with chronic kidney disease, those with liver disease, those with a condition affecting the brain or nerves and those who are obese.

Previously, environmental factors were hypothesised as being behind the higher risk to men.

This includes the fact men are more likely to be smokers.

The Handmaid’s Tale theories: Jezebel’s becomes new safehouse to protect June

June (played by Elisabeth Moss) took one more step for the rebellion against Gilead when she smuggled over 50 children at the end of season three of The Handmaid’s Tale. When the show finally returns to Hulu after the coronavirus pandemic, fan theories have suggested the opening episodes could see the return of a major location.

Production on the fourth season of Hulu’s critically acclaimed dystopian series was put on hold this year amid the coronavirus outbreak.

Elisabeth Moss and the rest of the cast and crew were set up to begin filming in Toronto, but lockdown restrictions have forced The Handmaid’s Tale into an unexpected hiatus.

Originally expected to return to screens this year, viewers could be waiting for many more months to see June and the Handmaid’s fight for freedom continue.

The first season faithfully adapted the vision of Margaret Atwood’s book of the same name, in which Handmaid Offred begins a complicated relationship with Commander Waterford (Joseph Fiennes).

  • The Handmaid’s Tale season 4 theories: Nick’s sacrifice to save June

In the television series, June is coerced into visiting a seedy club full of corrupt Commanders and indentured prostitutes named Jezebel’s.

While most women are either forced to serve the elite of Gilead or sent to the colonies, some are given the chance to escape a life of brutal labour by becoming subservient prostitutes in clubs like Jezebel’s.

The former hotel played a major role in the first season, but has only appeared briefly in subsequent instalments.

However, one fan took to Reddit to propose the location could be reclaimed by the rebellious Handmaids as their underground resistance expands in season four.

Redditor bigfoot114 posted: “So after completing Season 3, we saw that June has been shot and her Handmaid friends Janine, Alma, Brianna, and others have come to rescue June and they are carrying her off somewhere but we don’t know where.

“I have thought a lot about what will happen next when we are finally able to begin watching Season 4 and this is my prediction.”

The universally praised series reached new thrilling heights as season three concluded with the biggest cliffhanger yet, as a violent scuffle with a Gilead guard left June with a potentially fatal gunshot wound.

Thankfully, her fellow Handmaids quickly came to the rescue, leaving many fans wondering where she could be taken to recover from her severe wound.

This observant fan has suggested Jezebel’s could finally make its comeback in season four to provide June a safe haven against the watchful eye of Gilead.

They continued: “It probably won’t take very long for Gilead to discover that the Lawrence household was responsible for executing this operation.

“So clearly, the Guardians are going to be looking EVERYWHERE for June, Joseph (if he decides to hide) and the Marthas Beth and Sienna. So where would they go to hide and where will June be taken? Jezebel’s!”

New character for the series Commander Lawrence was manipulated by June into reluctantly helping with the Handmaid’s smuggling operation at the end of season three.

With such a key Gilead player assisting the rebellion, it’s only a matter of time before the Gilead Guardians start breaking down doors to find June.

Finally, the fan added: “I believe the Handmaids will hand June off to the Marthas and they will sneak her into Jezebels where she will be cared for by the Marthas until she recovers.”

When season four finally returns to Hulu, Jezebel’s could provide the wounded Handmaid the perfect starting point for her to heal up and light the fires of rebellion all over again.

13 Reasons Why season 3 recap: What happened in the last series?

We will use your email address only for sending you newsletters. Please see our Privacy Notice for details of your data protection rights.

13 Reasons Why season four is released on Netflix on Friday, June 5 as viewers find out what happens to the high schoolers in the final season. Ahead of its return, Express.co.uk has rounded up everything you need to remember about season three of the show.

What happened in 13 Reasons Why season 3?

Bryce Walker’s death

At the beginning of season three of 13 Reasons Why it was revealed Bryce Walker (played by Justin Prentice) had been murdered.

The much-hated footballer had raped Hannah Walker (Katherine Langford) in the first season and was one of the reasons she took her own life.

After it was revealed Bryce had been killed, the majority of season three was told through a mixture of flashbacks and modern day to reveal who was responsible.

This was all narrated by new student at Liberty High, Ani Achola (Grace Saif) as viewers found out the truth.

Tyler told the truth

One of the most heartwarming moments of season three was when Tyler Down (Devin Druid) admitted what had happened to him.

He told the police how Monty de la Cruz (Timothy Granaderos) had raped him as well as admitting he was a survivor of sexual abuse to this classmates.

In the finale of the series, all of his friends gathered at Monet’s Cafe to celebrate his photography.

Couples reunited

After a turbulent third season, Clay Jensen (Dylan Minnette) and Ani began dating, which is expected to continue into the fourth outing.

As well as this, Jessica Davies (Alisha Boe) and Justin Foley (Brandon Flynn) also reconciled after Justin admitted he was struggling with a drug addiction.

Who killed Bryce Walker?

Throughout the series, viewers were trying to work out who actually killed Bryce.

At one point it seemed the person responsible was Zach Dempsey (Ross Butler) after he had beaten up the footballer badly.

However, in the finale a flashback revealed this assault was not what actually killed him.

When Ani visited Deputy Standall (Mark Pellegrino) to tell him what really happened, viewers saw who the killers actually were.

In a flashback, it was revealed Alex Standall (Miles Heizer) and Jessica had gone to confront the footballer.

While Alex was initially about to help the badly beaten Bryce, when the footballer started to threaten Zach, Alex threw him in the water.

Both Alex and Jessica then watched as Bryce drowned to death in the brutal moment.

However, Ani did not tell the deputy this but instead blamed Monty for his death.

Viewers will remember how Monty had been sent to prison after Tyler confessed he had assaulted him.

However, in the confession scene it was revealed he had been killed inside his cell before he faced trial.

This is why the Liberty High students decided to frame him for Bryce’s death.

Monty framed

Framing Monty seemed to work in the finale as the police decided to close the case while Deputy Standall also burned some evidence which could link his son to the crime.

However, there was one thing the students didn’t count on, which was that Monty actually had an alibi on the night of Bryce’s murder.

He was with his casual boyfriend Winston Williams (Deaken Bluman) all night.

Then in the final moments of season three, Winston confronted Ani about lying to the police.

Looking forward to season four, it seems like Winston will be continuing in his mission to tell the truth about Monty.

Riverdale’s Vanessa Morgan takes a stand for her Black co-stars ‘Not being quiet anymore’

The murder of George Floyd by Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin has spurred the Black Lives Matter movement across the United States. As protests continue on the streets and social media, actress Vanessa Morgan has voiced her support by criticising how both herself and other Black cast members have been sidelined on the CW series Riverdale.

Never miss a royal update again by signing up to the Daily Express Royal Family newsletter

Vanessa Morgan has levelled multiple criticisms at Riverdale’s writers for the way storylines for the show’s Black characters have been mishandled and pushed to the side.

Although the series was initially praised for its diversity, Vanessa claims to be ‘paid the least’ of the show’s main cast and has spoken out against her lack of screen time on social media.

The actress took to Twitter and said: “Tired of how black people are portrayed in Media, tired of us being portrayed as thugs, dangerous or angry scary people.

“Tired of us also being used as sidekick non dimensional characters to our white leads. Or only used in the ads for diversity but not actually in the show.”

Vanessa then tagged her note: “I’m not being Quite anymore #BlackLivesMatter.”

Her character, Toni Topaz, was introduced as a Southside Serpent friend of Jughead Jones (played by Cole Sprouse), and was promoted to series regular when she became the girlfriend of Cheryl Blossom (Madelaine Petsch).

However, as the recent season progressed, Toni was often regulated to the background, while her white and lighter skinned co-stars KJ Apa, Lili Reinhart, Cole Sprouse and Camila Mendes (who identifies as Latin American) are given more attention.

She added in a reply: “Too bad I’m the only black series regular but also paid the least. Girl I could go on for days.”

The star clarified she feels no ill-will towards her castmates and warned against her followers attacking the cast of Riverdale on social media.

Vanessa added: “My role on Riverdale has nothing to do with my fellow castmates/friends. They don’t write the show. So no need to attack them, they don’t call the shots & I know they have my back.”

Co-star Lili Reinhart, who portrays Betty Cooper, demonstrated her solidarity and responded to Vanessa’s tweets with a message of goodwill.

The series came under fire for delegating Vanessa to a ‘sidekick’ role for on-screen girlfriend Cheryl Blossom, who often share screen time together but solely in support for Madelaine Petsch’s Riverdale storylines.

Moreover, Vanessa continued by criticising how the fictional band Josie and the Pussycats have recently taken a backseat to Riverdale’s ongoing drama.

Ashleigh Murray, who plays lead singer Josie for the series, was insulted by a fan who referred to the Riverdale actress as a ‘diva’ behind the scenes.

Vanessa Morgan leapt to her defence and responded: “Maybe the show should write for [Josie] like the white characters.”

In addition to Vanessa’s Twitter comments, her Riverdale co-star Cole Sprouse was detained after taking part in a peaceful Black Lives Matter protest in Santa Monica.

Demonstrations across the United States have been taking place after 46-year-old George Floyd was killed after being kneeled on by a police officer for over eight minutes.

Cole Sprouse clarified: “It needs to be stated that as a straight white man, and a public figure, the institutional consequences of my detainment are nothing in comparison to others within the movement.”

Finally, Vanessa Morgan tweeted her support for the ongoing movement: “[…] finally feel like I can speak up for myself and my fellow brothers and sisters & be heard. Usually everyone is fake listening. I really hope a change is coming.”

Series creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa has promoted charities for the Black Lives Matter movement on Twitter, but has not addressed Vanessa Morgan’s comments.

The CW has also been contacted for comment.

Riverdale is available on Netflix.

Monty Don confession: How gardener fulfilled life ambition after near-death experience

Monty Don, 64, has become Britain’s best known green-fingered extraordinaire during his time as a TV gardener. Last week, he celebrated the 52nd birthday of his beloved BBC flagship show, Gardeners’ World.

Having presented it since 2003, it has become one of the things Monty is most proud of.

This was made all the more so when, in 2011, viewers around the country were invited into Monty’s Herefordshire home where he has presented from ever since.

A few weeks ago, Monty found himself in our living rooms yet again, this time presenting the Chelsea Flower Show.

It wasn’t, however, anything like the show’s usual running.

With the coronavirus outbreak and current lockdown, participants were forced to present their flamboyant displays from their own homes.

Competitors were left despondent at the news, many having prepared in excess of a year for the big date.

In 2008, Monty suffered an intense health scare.

It led to a hiatus from presenting Gardeners’ World, and a revaluation of the strenuous work he was putting himself through.

JUST INHow Monty Don ‘lost it all’ before breaking into broadcasting

At the time, he told the Daily Mail how he woke one morning with his body’s entire left side numb.

Feeling nauseous and dizzy, he explained: “I turned to Sarah in a panic and said ‘I think I’m having a stroke.

“I’d been feeling pretty rotten since Christmas, which I’d put down to exhaustion because I’d been working so hard, but this was completely different.

“It felt like there was a kind of chasm in my head, as if there was a section that wasn’t working. It was the feeling that I wouldn’t be able to speak if I tried, but then when I did try I found I could.

“My rational mind was saying ‘You can do this’, but my first reaction to anything, such as moving my arm, was ‘I can’t do this’.”

He later added: “I said to my wife Sarah ‘Hold me because I think I’m dying and, if I am, I want to die in your arms’.”

The episode was later identified as a minor stroke, also known as a transient ischaemic attack.

Coming within death’s grasp led to a period of reflection.

One such meditation was revealed during a Radio Times interview in 2016, when Monty revealed how he relished the thought of becoming a grandfather.

Although, at the time, he conceded that the prospect seemed far away.

Talking about his beloved golden retriever, Nellie, he revealed his heartbreaking wish for grandchildren.

He said: “My children tell me I’m much too indulgent with Nellie, so perhaps when the time comes I shall treat grandchildren the same way, like very favoured dogs.

“There is no immediate prospect of grandfatherhood that I’m aware of, but I’d really like to have small children around again.

“I’d know what to do. I’d be less cross about things that there’s no need to be cross about. And I can always hand them back.

“Most problems in parenthood are to do with exhaustion, trying to do six things at once.”

Monty has since been gifted a single grandchild, a boy, George Jack Don.

The little Don was born on May 28, 2019.

Money Heist plot hole: Why didn’t Manila take part in the first heist? Huge timeline error

We will use your email address only for sending you newsletters. Please see our Privacy Notice for details of your data protection rights.

Money Heist fans will remember the character of Manila (played by Belen Cuesta) was introduced in season four of the hit Spanish series. She was revealed to be a member of the heist after being visible as part of the hostages during season three. However, some viewers were left wondering why she was not part of the initial heists in the first two outings.

Why did Manila not take part in the first heist?

Season four of Money Heist revealed how another member of the team had been hiding in plain sight all along.

Manila was first introduced in episode five when Denver (Jaime Lorente) and his father Moscow (Paco Tous) were seen in a flashback.

They were pleading with the Professor (Álvaro Morte) to invite Moscow’s godson Juanito to join the team.

Then in a later scene, the character was introduced as Julia after it was revealed she had transitioned.

Back in the present day, Julia revealed her code name was Manila as it became obvious she had been spying for the heist gang among the hostages.

However, some viewers have pointed out a confusing plot hole about her involvement in the heist.

This is due to the fact these flashbacks were she was first introduced are from before the first heist.

This is evident because Moscow is involved in bringing her on to the team, and viewers will remember he was killed in part two.

So while Manila is in season three as eagle-eyed viewers will notice she was part of the hostages, she did not take part in the earlier heist.

This was the team’s attack on the Royal Mint of Spain, which was the focus of the first two outings.

User Retrolad90 posted on Reddit: “Maybe I missed it but is there any explanation as to why she never took part in the Royal Mint of Spain Heist?

“Her character is introduced to us in a flashback with Moscow and it looks like she is going to be part of the gang there but of course she doesn’t feature in the first two parts.”

Beatles best album poll: Here is the BEST Beatles album – and it’s not what you think

Express.co.uk readers are thoroughly discerning and have made their decision on which is the best Beatles album. Various magazines have ranked the Beatles albums in the past, and there is often a fight among the top three. However, the winner of our Express.co.uk poll is quite surprising, leaving one of these three completely out of the running.

According to Express.co.uk readers, Revolver is the best Beatles album.

The album received 18 percent of the votes, and truly split fans as they threw their weight behind different albums.

This is quite a surprise, given this album was not the favourite of any Beatles members, most famously John Lennon and Paul McCartney.

In a 1971 interview with Rolling Stone, Lennon said one of his favourite albums was The White Album, and gave a pretty harsh reason as to why.

He said: “[Paul] wanted it [The White Album] to be more a group thing, which really means more Paul. So he never liked that album.

“I always preferred it to all the other albums, including Pepper, because I thought the music was better.

“The Pepper myth is bigger, but the music on the White Album is far superior, I think.”

Lennon’s favourite, The Beatles, known as the White Album, only just made the top four, being beaten by Ringo Starr’s favourite, Abbey Road.

Abbey Road gained 16 percent of the vote, and the third place spot went to Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, with 15 percent of the vote.

Generally speaking, Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band is considered one of the greatest albums of all time.

This album was in fact Sir Paul’s favourite album, as he told Bob Costas in a 1991 interview: “It wasn’t entirely my idea but to get us away from being ‘The Beatles’ I had this idea that we should pretend we’re this other group.”

Sir Paul did, however, say this was one of his favourites, with each album representing a different moment in their lives.

Sadly for Sir Paul, this album only made the top five, coming third with 15 percent of the vote, and it beat Lennon’s favourite White Album, which gained 13 percent of the vote and came fourth.

George Harrison’s favourite, Rubber Soul, won the fifth place with just shy of 12 percent, and Harrison spoke out regularly about this album being his favourite.

In 1990 Harrison said: “Rubber Soul was my favourite album, even at that time. I think that it was the best one we made.”

“The most important thing about it was that we were suddenly hearing sounds we weren’t able to hear before.

Please Please Me – 5 percent

Help! – 4 percent

Magical Mystery Tour/With the Beatles – 2 percent

Jo’s husband Clive was informed that he would not recover and to “prepare for the worst.”

Piers added: “She was in the very same position that Clive was in, you can’t see your loved one. You just have to muddle through, I guess.”

Previously Piers had spoken out about Kate’s “living hell” as she has been kept apart from Derek while he remained in hospital.

He revealed: “We haven’t talked about it much because Kate Garraway is going through a living hell like many people. Her husband has been in a very serious condition for many many weeks.

‘We can all just hope and pray he comes through it, but it’s been very, very difficult for Kate and her family.

“We miss her here at the show, but obviously we stay in touch with her a lot. We send her and the kids all our love and we just wish Derek all the very best.”

The fourth season of Netflix’s 80s throwback is one of the most anticipated releases for the streaming service.

Season three concluded last year after the kids of Hawkins took on the Mind Flayer beneath the Starcourt Mall.

The finale episode ended on a bittersweet note as peace was once again restored, but at the cost of former town Sheriff Jim Hopper (played by David Harbour) being taken prisoner in Russia.

A teaser trailer released earlier this year confirmed Hopper’s survival, but updates on the production of Stranger Things have been sparse as television production across the States continues to be delayed by the coronavirus lockdown.

Thankfully, a recent interview with stunt coordinator and second unit director for Stranger Things, Hiro Koda, for ComicBook.com has provided insight for the show’s current stage of filming.

Hiro has had an impressive career in TV and movie stunts, and joined the third season of Stranger Things to lend his expertise to the more action-heavy instalment of the sci-fi epic.

During the interview, Hiro confirmed the series had completed two episodes of season four, and hinted at a darker tone for Stranger Things’ next outing.

He said: “All I can tell you is that season four is… It’s darker. It’s going to be epic. There’s lots of great surprises and all your favourite people are in it.

“It’s going to be so good. It’s so epic. I’ve gotten to read through almost eight scripts now, so it’s pretty awesome. I don’t know how many we’re going to get.”

Audiences have speculated the upcoming instalment will be Stranger Things’ last, although Hiro’s comments suggest the series will continue long into the future based on popular demand.

The stunt coordinator continued to share his opinion on how production for the series is set to continue during the current uncertainty around the coronavirus pandemic.

Hiro added: “It’s really just this pandemic and trying to figure out when productions will be going back. We’re kind of spread out this year.”

“We usually shoot just in Atlanta, but we’ve been spread out in two different places this year. So trying to figure out the scheduling of it. And then not just dealing with when production is going to actually start in Atlanta, most of the cast is from California.”

Rumours Stranger Things stars Winona Ryder and Brett Gelman have been spotted in Latvia have spurred speculation that the country in Europe will act as the Russian backdrop for the fourth season’s mission to rescue Hopper from the Soviet Labour Camp.

However, the upcoming season’s ambitious shooting schedule has made plans to restart production much more difficult when restrictions begin to be lifted.

Hiro Koda also touched on US President Donald Trump’s plans to ease lockdown restrictions in stages, and how the forthcoming arrangements could further hinder production of Stranger Things and other popular US shows.

He continued: “Some of the phases allow companies to open up and be like 25 percent employees, and then it goes to 40% or whatever, and then it kind of increases from there. But with us, as a film production, we have to be 100 percent.

“Everybody can wear masks and gloves and whatever, but the actors can’t, they have to take the masks off. They’ve got to be in close contact.”

Although some world leaders have begun plans to gradually ease the ongoing lockdown, television production may not be able to restart until the coronavirus crisis has been completely controlled.

This means Stranger Things fans are preparing for a much longer wait than usual for the highly anticipated premiere of season four.

Stranger Things seasons 1-3 are available to stream on Netflix.
