In the history of television, there have been very few instances when a leading actor has left their role on television. Last week, when The CW announced that Ruby Rose would be exiting her groundbreaking role as Kate Kane on Batwoman, jaws dropped.
When Rose was cast in the role back in 2018, fans were delighted that the Arrowverse was going to be introducing an LGBTQ character to the franchise. Even more empowering was Rose’s casting since the Orange Is the New Black actress is openly gay.
Though Batwoman premiered to great reviews in October 2019, and The CW has renewed the series for Season 2, Rose will not be returning to the titular role. In fact, she refuses to address why she left the show.

Things were not working between Ruby Rose and The CW
There was a ton of initial excitement when Rose was first cast in Batwoman. Unfortunately, that soured rather quickly. The Australian actress left social media after being bullied and harassed. Then, early into filming the series, the 34-year-old endured a horrific back injury that required emergency surgery.
This clearly did not get better from there since The CW willingly allowed Rose out of her contract, something the Arroweverse has never done before.
“I have made the very difficult decision to not return to Batwoman next season,” Rose said in a statement. “This was not a decision I made lightly as I have the utmost respect for the cast, crew, and everyone involved with the show in both Vancouver and in Los Angeles.”

Filming ‘Batwoman’ was overwhelming to Ruby Rose
In a joint statement, Warner Bros., The CW, and Berlanti Productions thanked Rose for her work but focused on moving forward and finding a new lead. “Warner Bros. Television, The CW and Berlanti Productions thank Ruby for her contributions to the success of our first season and wish her all the best,” the statement said. “The studio and network are firmly committed to Batwoman’s second season and long-term future, and we — along with the show’s talented creative team — look forward to sharing its new direction, including the casting of a new lead actress and member of the LGBTQ community, in the coming months.”
Not much else has been said, but rumors have swirled that Rose could not handle Batwoman’s intense filming schedule. “Doing a network drama is one of the hardest acting jobs, and not everyone is well equipped to handle the intensity and long hours involved,” Deadline’s Nellie Andreeva revealed. “I hear Rose, whose most extensive previous TV gig was a nine-episode arc on Orange Is the New Black, was not happy, and the show’s team was not happy to a point where no one could see this going for another season. It was not a good fit, and the studio and the star opted to part ways.”

It wasn’t an easy decision but those who know, know.. I didn’t want to not acknowledge everyone involved and how big this was for TV and for our community. I have stayed silent because that’s my choice for now but know I adore you all. I’m sure next season will be amazing also. Xxx *hangs up cowl and cape. Also @mysmarvel

Ruby Rose refuses to reveal why she really left ‘Batwoman’
Rose has finally broken her silence about her Batwoman exit, but not in the way fans expected. It looks like she’s keeping details about what really went down to herself “for now.”
“It wasn’t an easy decision but those who know, know…I didn’t want to not acknowledge everyone involved and how big this was for TV and for our community,” she wrote in a cryptic Instagram post. “I have stayed silent because that’s my choice for now but know I adore you all. I’m sure next season will be amazing also. Xxx *hangs up cowl and cape.”
If and when Rose does share details, we’re sure they will be quite interesting.
