Here’s Where to Find the Outer Banks Set Locations in South Carolina

Arguably, the most captivating part of Netflix’s smash-hit Outer Banks isn’t the case of John B’s missing father, or the millions in sunken treasure, or even any of the (many) romances; it’s the setting itself. The Outer Banks, as the show describes it, is a gorgeous, sun-washed “paradise on earth” where socioeconomic status automatically tosses its inhabitants into one of two groups: the working-class Pogues or the coddled Kooks. The Kooks live in enormous estates, while the Pogues maintain the docks, restaurants, country clubs, and shacks along the beach. Everywhere you look, there’s beauty. But—as you’d expect from any teen drama worth its salt—there’s also danger.

The irony is, of course, that Outer Banks didn’t actually film any of its scenes in the real Outer Banks region of North Carolina. Why? Because of the state’s House Bill 2 legislation, a.k.a. the “bathroom law,” which requires transgender people to use bathrooms designated for the sex they were assigned at birth. Netflix, which prides itself on pro-LGBTQ content and policies, didn’t want to film in an area where a discriminatory policy had such an effect. So the cast and crew moved their operation to Charleston, South Carolina, scouting locations to make the town look like the real Outer Banks.

There’s debate over whether they succeeded or failed in replicating the Carolina region, but one thing’s for sure: The cinematography is stunning. Watching the roaring waves and swaying trees, you feel immediately transported to the salt and sweat of the beach. But if you’re looking for a little more where that came from, take a virtual tour of the set. Here’s how (and where) Outer Banks came alive.

Shem Creek

If you’re watching any scene involving the Pogues on a boat, chances are good you’ll catch a glimpse of the quaint waterside boardwalk called Shem Creek in Mount Pleasant, part of Charleston County. It’s an excellent spot to catch some rays while watching shrimping boats float in and out of the harbor.

Visit here

Pitt Street

According to the Post and Courier, Charleston’s local newspaper, select scenes were filmed along Pitt Street, which is part of Mount Pleasant’s Old Village and includes this quaint causeway. It’s a definite must-walk if you’re scouting for the traditional blend of fresh air and Southern charm.

Visit here

Hunting Island

Several of the nighttime beach scenes were filmed on Hunting Island, making it the likely location of the Boneyard, where Pogues, Kooks, and tourists come together to party and, apparently, hook up. This is also where Topper and JJ get into that fateful drunken brawl that nearly results in murder because … drama, I guess?

Visit here

Hunting Island Lighthouse

When the Pogue crew discover the “Redfield” clue on the compass John B’s father left for him in the boat wreck, John B and Kiara head to Redfield Lighthouse. The old cast-iron structure is actually the Hunting Island Lighthouse, originally built in 1859 and reconstructed after the Civil War. If you’re looking for one of the best views in South Carolina, you can climb up to the top for an admission price of $2.

Visit here

The Wreck of the Richard and Charlene

Kiara works at a restaurant referred to as The Wreck, which is actually a real establishment in Mount Pleasant. (You get a glimpse of this back porch when John B chases Kiara down and apologizes for kissing her.) If you’re looking for grub while in town, choose from classic plates of Southern comfort, including fried shrimp, hush puppies, fried green tomatoes, clam chowder, oysters, grouper, and, of course, banana pudding.

Visit here

Lowndes Grove

Tanneyhill Plantation, home of Sarah Cameron and her family, practically drips old Southern wealth. That’s not exactly a surprise, given that, in Outer Banks, it’s the previous home of the fictional Denmark Tanney, a former slave who discovered gold while captaining the Royal Merchant. But in real life, the estate is a wedding and events venue, first built in 1786 and now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This photo was captured by Lauren Myers Photography, but you can see many more images on the Lowndes Grove website.

Visit here

Morris Island Lighthouse

Making appearances in both the trailer and select shots throughout the series—including the marsh boat chase in Episode 1—is the Morris Island Lighthouse, which pokes out above the waves around Charleston Harbor. The original tower was built in 1767, but you can tour the reconstructed version for $47.

Visit here

Kiawah Island Golf Resort

Head to this iconic vacation spot if you’re hoping to re-create the magic of Midsummers. The ball was filmed here at The Ocean Course Clubhouse on the Kiawah Island Golf Resort. Really want to go all out? Plan your trip for 2021—the PGA Tour will be in town, hosting its annual competition on this very course.

Visit here

James Island

Not all scenes were filmed on public property, so you might have some trouble tracking down the exact location of your favorite characters’ homes. But Internet sleuths have deduced that John B’s house, where the Pogues stake their claim, is probably situated on James Island, where the Post and Courier reported a “beach shack” was used.

Visit here

Dunes West Golf and River Club

That outdoor movie scene in Episode 4 was captured on the verdant lawn of the Dunes West Golf and River Club. You’ll need a membership to enter, so don’t expect any picnics without paying a price. But you can always scan through moments from the Outer Banks set that were captured on the club’s Facebook page.

A comprehensive look at where Adele has been as she celebrates 32nd birthday

Adele made a rare appearance on her social media this week to celebrate her 32nd birthday and, honestly, it’s sent the internet into meltdown.

The Someone Like You singer, who, for lack of a better cliché, is seemingly living her best life right now, shared an Instagram post late on Tuesday night (5 May) to thank fans for their birthday wishes as she took another spin around the sun

With another flourish she evidently disappeared into the abyss, to return again…sometime.

But it left us all wondering where the flippin’ heck Adele has been recently, with the promise of new tunes lingering in the air.

With new songs from Adele about as certain as the thought of being able to enjoy a beer garden in London in the coming months (read: not very), we thought we’d put on our sleuth suit and detective fedora to trace the movements of Adele as of late.

Because what else are you going to be reading today but stories about Adele, eh?

May 2019: Adele turns 31 and swears like a trooper

Not long after her split from husband Simon Konicki, Adele turned 31 and wanted to mark the occasion with quite the prophetic message.

Sharing some gorgeous black and white snaps of herself having a blast as she celebrated the big day, even stopping to twerk in a mirrored room, she wrote: ‘This is 31…thank f***ing god.

’30 tried me so hard but I’m owning it and trying my hardest to lean in to it all. No matter how long we’re here for life is constant and complicated at times.

‘I’ve changed drastically in the last couple years and I’m still changing and that’s okay. 31 is going to be a big ol’ year and I’m going to spend it all on myself.

‘For the first time in a decade I’m ready to feel the world around me and look up for once. Be kind to yourself people we’re only human, go slow, put your phone down and laugh out loud at every opportunity.

‘Learning to REALLY truly love yourself is it, and I’ve only just realized that that is more than enough. I’ll learn to love you lot eventually 😂

‘Bunch of f****ing savages, 30 will be a drum n bass record to spite you. Chin up eh ❤️.’

June 2019: Adele makes her 90s dreams come true as she parties with The Spice Girls

A Spice Girls fan from way back, Adele headed to the group’s reunion concert at Wembley.

The Rolling In The Deep singer was in her element as she went wild in the stands, filmed by her mates letting lose to the four-piece’s set as they performed hits including Say You’ll Be There and Never Give Up On The Good Times.

That wasn’t all, though, as she was also captured backstage with the fab four and shared a selfie with Ginger herself, Geri Horner.

July 2019: Adele is spotted at a Celine Dion gig

Heading along to see another queen in action, Adele took in Celine Dion’s British Summer Time gig in Hyde Park.

Chilling with Alan Carr’s husband Paul Drayton, who was pictured leading Adele through the crowd before they settled in for a night of Celine’s tunes, Alan joked about the impending gossip about who was holding hands with Adele, tweeting: ‘Adele’s new man is well fit.’

August 2019: Adele is having a way better summer than you

Just rubbing in the fact that Adele has more money than we will ever see (more than likely, anyway – let’s not rule anything out just yet) the superstar shared a glimpse into how she was spending her summer.

Taking to the ‘gram, Adele shared a series of shots including everything from one where she’s relaxing onboard a boat, to another where she’s admiring the wonders of nature and the erosion lines of a canyon.

In another, she’s letting the wild winds of nature do their thing in the collection captioned ‘Summer 2019’.

October 2019: Adele is dating Skepta?

Hey, everyone love story so perhaps it was no surprise the internet was all kinds of ‘hey, what’s going on here’ when Adele was reported to have been dating Skepta.

According to The Sun, Adele is already stepping things up a notch when it comes to her romance with Skepta and has ‘introduced’ him to her friends, including her best pal Laura as well as mate James Corden.

News of Adele and Skepta dating first surfaced at the beginning of October, with it being claimed the pair, who both hail from Tottenham, share a ‘special connection’.

However, it was all from ‘insiders’ and neither actually confirmed, nor denied, the romance. So, hey, we’ll take that one with a grain of salt for now.

Mid-October 2019: Nicki Minaj teases collaboration

Right as we start to get really, really antsy for some Adele tunes, Nicki Minaj goes and drops the mother of all hints that she might be working with Adele – who so brilliantly rapped Nicki’s verse in Monster.

Nicki confirmed the collaboration to ET, saying: ‘Yes and yes, yes and yes, wooo hoo!

‘But Adele made me swear to secrecy that I’m not allowed to tell anyone that I’m working with her and we already shot a video. And it’s an epic song!’

Maybe one day we’ll get to hear it.

Late-October 2019: Adele parties at Drake’s birthday

Drake was joined by the likes of Chris Brown, Adele and Future as the rapper celebrated his birthday at Goya Studios in Hollywood. P Diddy, Kim Kardashian’s pal Larsa Pippen. Snoop Dogg and French Montana were all also in attendance with French revealing a blindingly dazzling piece of jewellery he got for Drake, said to be worth $175,000 (£135,000).

The event saw many of the guests pull out their black-tie best with Adele wearing a stunning velvet black gown with off-the-shoulder neckline and her classic beehive hairstyle – as she later posted an iconic shot to the ‘gram.

Pouting to the camera, she wrote: ‘I used to cry but now I sweat.’

Halloween 2019: Adele aces the holiday as Captain Hook

The singer had graced her social media with a few shots in October, one of the best coming from her Halloween celebrations, where she dressed as a funky pirate.

Giving the pirate a bit of a wardrobe makeover, she rocked a skintight red and black leopard print PVC suit, complete with a wide-brimmed hat and hook.

December 2019: Adele’s Christmas look is bangin’

Adele typically loves fancy dress but she opted for an ultra-glamorous look at her Christmas party last year as she shared photos from her private festive bash, which appeared to be London-themed.

It wasn’t known where the party was held but Adele was seen posing against a fake backdrop featuring Big Ben. With her hair swept to one side with big loose curls, Adele oozed old Hollywood glamour in a satin black dress with a small split at the front.

December/January 2020: Adele and Harry Styles go on holiday, James Corden was there as well

Adele, Harry and James holidayed in the idyllic Anguilla and Virgin Islands over the New Year holiday, where they all had a slap up time.

The singer was seen racing into the sea clutching a drink at one stage, really giving us all kinds of holiday vibes to cherish.

Feeling quite generous, apparently they also left an impressive £1500 tip for their server following a meal.

Rolling in the deep my name, rolling in the deep by nature.

January 2020: Ayda Field’s trainer claims she’s been working with Adele

Claiming Adele ‘doesn’t like exercise’ which is something we can all relate to, amiright, Ayda Field’s trainer claimed she’d been working with Adele at Robbie Williams and Ayda’s house.

That came after, in June last year, chatters began the star had been working out with Ayda, amid claims the training regime gave her a ‘new lease on life’.

Early February 2020: Adele hangs out with Jay-Z and Beyonce at their Oscars party

Adele attended Jay Z and Beyonce’s Chateau Marmont party following this year’s Oscars, and while only one photo made t out of the event we were all floored by this blessing.

Taking to Instagram, Polish journalist Kinga Rusin shared a snap of her alongside the Someone Like You singer at the party,
Claiming they apparently spoke about shoes.

February 2020: Adele officiates a pals wedding and belts out karaoke

Adele took advantage of the PA system at The Mason’s Arms in Battersea earlier this year (a pub that is now surely going to be enjoying a nice surge in patrons) when she grabbed the mic and shared some bangers.

The bash saw the British star dance to her own Rolling In The Deep and belt out a cover of Candi Staton’s Young Hearts Run Free to guests gathered for former Maccabees star Hugo White and his author wife Laura Dockrill’s wedding, which was, of course, captured on social media all for posterity.

March 2020: Ryan Tedder has been working with Adele on these new tunes

Wherever these new tunes may be, OneRepublic’s Ryan Tedder shared an insight into them, after working with Adele.

Ryan, who co-wrote and produced Adele’s hits Rumour Has It and Remedy, has hinted that he will be involved in her new album.

He told The Sun: ‘[I’m going to] stay completely mum on new Adele. I’ll just say that she sounds better than ever.’

Well then…

April 2020: Adele throws doubt we won’t be getting new music this year

While we got into all sorts of a tizz earlier in the year (more on that below) after Adele said we’d be getting new tunes in September, that was thrown into doubt when she threw a cryptic comment onto social media.

The Someone Like You singer slid into the comments section of the controversial Instagram live battle between producers Babyface and Teddy Riley.

She entertained eagle-eyed fans who spotted her comments with funny remarks about the blunders, but one remark in particular has sparked cause for concern.

‘Come on, it’s 2020 – we ain’t meant to get what we want!’ Adele wrote in reference to the anticipated battle between the legendary R&B producers being a huge let-down.

And, judging by events so far this year – notably the coronavirus pandemic – Adele certainly has a point, but some fans have interpreted the comment to mean something else entirely.

We still have a while to go until September comes and goes, so let’s remain positive, eh?

May 2020: So, today, we know she’s celebrating her birthday

Of course we’ve all lost our proverbial with the appearance of Adele on her socials today.

‘Thank you for the birthday love. I hope you’re all staying safe and sane during this crazy time,’ Adele wrote.

The mother-of-one then paid tribute to the frontline workers fighting against coronavirus and added: ‘I’d like to thank all of our first responders and essential workers who are keeping us safe while risking their lives! You are truly our angels ♥️ 2020 okay bye thanks x.’

Where I Work: Lesley, the CEO of Nicky Clarke hairdressing working from home

Our Where I Work daily series is going inside people’s home offices as the coronavirus lockdown makes working from home the norm.

We’ve been inside a home office on a houseboat, met a barefoot athlete who has no chairs, and seen how a mum has made her daughter a mini desk so she can feel involved in the working day.

Today we’re seeing how Lesley Clarke, 67, is working during the pandemic.

Lesley is the CEO of the Nicky Clarke hairdressing, styling, and haircare empire, and also runs a new business called AZURE by Planet Friendly Beauty, offering a range of haircare products which are made from natural ingredients, are free from irritants and packaged sustainably.

Since lockdown began she’s been working from her home, where she lives alone, as her autoimmune condition makes her one of the vulnerable.

Hi, Lesley! Has coronavirus changed the way you work?

I’m in the fortunate position of having my own office in our main offices and also a fully functioning office in my house.

Before the lockdown I mainly worked from home and held lots of meetings both with external and internal people in my sitting room and dining room.

I would go into the office if I needed to but found working from home helped me achieve more.

What are your personal rules for working from home? How do you stay focused?

I have a routine – although now my routine incorporates housework, which it didn’t before!

I always get up at the same time and go to bed at the same time – this hasn’t changed.

I never have a problem staying focused – to be honest, I have a problem switching off from work. I always make sure that I break for lunch and make sure I eat.

Talk us through your home office.

I have a dedicated office. It has two desks, two computers, a printer, scanner, and a shredder.

Lots and lots of bespoke filing cabinets, but I have had to add to this so it looks a bit messy now and not streamlined at all.

I’m a bit anal about mess, so this upsets me a bit.

The office has cream suede curtains, parquet flooring, bespoke oak filing cabinets. A glass desk and a white wooden desk. It is decorated in very calming colours.

I do tend to work from other areas of my home too for a change of scenery – such as the sofa or dining room.

Have you found working in the lockdown challenging?

I’m doing more video calls now, which I must confess, I don’t like!

Although I am used to working from home I really miss the face to face interaction. I have never liked talking on the phone and I don’t think that will ever change – you can tell so much more about a situation face to face.

What’s a working day like for you?

I start my day at 9am and read as many newspapers as I can. I like to know what is going on as this can shape my outlook.

I then go through all the emails that might have come in overnight from all of my companies.

Next up, I make a list of tasks that I want to do that day and make any phone calls that I have to make. Then I start answering all the emails that need my attention. To be honest, most of my day is taken up with emails. I also spend quite a bit of time on the internet looking at lifestyle.

I break for lunch at 1:30pm and I might go into the garden for this and potter about a bit.

I finish work at 6pm. I do tend to work much longer than this but that will be sitting on the sofa instead of behind a desk.

What advice do you have for people new to working from home?

Plan a routine and stick to it. Make sure you have meal breaks and eat properly.

Get up, have a shower and get dressed. Don’t work in your pyjamas – your mind set won’t be the same as if you are dressed.

Do you have a working-from-home setup you fancy sharing? Email [email protected] to get involved in Where I Work.
