24 Hours in A&E viewers left sobbing by 'heartbreaking' death as pensioner fights for breath | The Sun

VIEWERS across the country were left heartbroken last night after it emerged a patient on 24 hours in A&E had died.

The gritty Channel 4 series aired one of its most traumatic deaths to date as pensioner Jim struggled for breath.

Jim, 70, was featured on the Channel 4 show after being rushed to hospital in the fallout from abusing alcohol.

The 70-year-old was previously told by doctors that if he carried on drinking he would die – but Jim couldn't shake his demons, and found himself in hospital fighting for his life.

The pensioner came with his daughter, Pauline, who was waiting by his side and praying her father could be saved.

"I'm just panicking," Jim said to the medical staff.

Despite being in a life-threatening state, Jim still cracked jokes with the medical nurse, saying: "If I won the lottery, and it was a pound under a million, I'd worry why didn't I get the other pound.

"It's crazy isn't it, if I don't have a worry I'll invent one."

Daughter Pauline, described her father as 'vibrant' and 'lively', saying he likes to 'gamble, and bet on the horses'.

Pauline said her father turned to alcohol to escape the responsibilities of being a parent.

She added: "At the time, it was just horrible, I remember him coming in late at night and I would be in bed, and I could hear him coming in, and it wasn't very nice."

Jim also lost his marriage to alcohol too, his daughter admitted.

As Jim's breathing got worse, the medical team rushed in to give him CPR, as he went into cardiac arrest.

Doctors, managed to restart Jim's heart, and he was shortly taken into intensive care so the doctors could monitor his condition, and try to determine why he suffered a sudden cardiac arrest.

While in intensive care, Jim's condition continued to deteriorate.

Daughter, Pauline said she knew then that "he wouldn't make it".

After several days in the hospital, Jim sadly passed away.

At the end of the episode Pauline burst into tears and spoke candidly about how much she missed him.

Viewers became emotional on social media throughout the program.

Taking to Twitter, one user wrote: "I feel like 24 hours in A&E is just getting sadder, and more heartbreaking each episode – Like watching a persons character and learning about them, and then finding out they died at the end."

Another said: "Just watched this on Channel 4 and was quite disturbed at how the nurses handled Jim who clearly could not breath, and subsequently went into cardiac arrest and later died….shocked."

24 Hours In A&E airs on Channel 4 at 9pm.
