At her trial, Betty explained she never planned to kill Dan and Linda and the crime was not premeditated.
Her defence at the trial was she suffered from battered woman syndrome (BWS) and was driven over the edge to commit the double killing.
On the other hand, the prosecution portrayed Betty was a murderer who planned to kill her ex-husband and his new wife.
She was found guilty on two counts of second-degree murder on December 11, 1991 at a courthouse in California.
Betty was sentenced to two consecutive terms of 15 years to life plus two years for illegal use of a firearm.
In total, Betty Broderick is serving 32-years-to-life in prison.
The real Betty Broderick is still alive today and is currently incarcerated at the California Institute for Women in Los Angeles, where she is expected to spend the rest of her life.
Her request for parole was denied in January 2010 and again in November 2011 and for a third time January 2017.
CNN reported Betty’s first parole request was denied because she did not show remorse for the killings or acknowledge any wrongdoings.

Speaking to Forbes about taking on the role and telling Betty’s story, Peet said: “There were feelings of betrayal that Betty just couldn’t deal with.
“I understood when she talked about feeling more peaceful when she was in jail. She immediately accepted her punishment and embraced it.”
She added: “What scared me was that she had no remorse for the murders, or at least claims not to have any. That definitely scared me.
“I had to focus on more than the murders to be able to take on this role.”
