Casualty spoilers: Jade meets her birth mother as the soap returns
We’ve not visited Casualty since May, when you might remember Dylan (William Beck) ended up getting shot as he threw himself in between an armed man and Faith (Kirsty Mitchell).
In the intervening weeks he’s had time to recover (hurrah!) and is back at work for the first time since the shooting. The main focus of the episode, however, is on Jade (Gabriella Leon) and a planned reunion with her birth mother.
After wondering about whether or not to meet her mother for a long time, Jade is understandably nervous as the meeting approaches.
She’s particularly worried about how her mother will react to her deafness – will it be a problem? Could it be the reason she was put into care in the first place? Marty (Shaheen Jafargholi) is reassuring and offers to go with her for support – but Jade feels that it’s something she needs to do herself.
When the reunion finally takes place, Jade’s mother Susie (Sophie Stone) is not at all what Jade expected. As mother and daughter start to talk and get to know each other, Jade has the feeling that Susie isn’t being entirely honest with her account of the past. And who is the mystery woman who keeps ringing Susie every few minutes?
Back at the hospital, Jade’s nursing skills are put to the test when Hafiz (Nav Sidhu), a patient who has recently had a heart transplant comes to the ED in a state of near-collapse.
As Jade and Charlie (Derek Thompson) find out more about his story, Charlie can’t help but be reminded of Duffy, whose organs went to transplant patients after her death. Will Charlie be able to put his feelings about Duffy aside and treat Hafiz like any other patient?
As Dylan announces he’s in the ED on admin duties while his arm heals, Faith obviously can’t forget that he was prepared to take a bullet for her. She tries to talk to him about it – but she’s shocked when he pushes her away.
And there’s a nice bit of news about some old Casualty favourites.
Sue Haasler is the author of five novels and the official BBC Holby City book, which you can read about here.
Casualty returns Saturday 11 July on BBC One.
