Chris Pratt did not want to join Guardians of the Galaxy

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 teased in Marvel trailer

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 is just around the corner, but the cast and crew are looking back on when the first movie hit cinemas.

This was the first Marvel movie that earnestly spoke about the Infinity Stones and introduced Thanos in a big way. This, of course, set up what would become the Infinity Saga, ending with Avengers Endgame some years later. Ultimately, the movie was well-received and kickstarted the franchise that we know and love today.

But casting director Sarah Finn recalls it wasn’t always smooth sailing while she was bringing the picture to life with director James Gunn.

Speaking to Variety on the red carpet for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 this week, she was quizzed over getting Chris Pratt involved in the first place as Star-Lord / Peter Quill.

“This is one of the crazier stories of casting,” she admitted. “Chris wasn’t an obvious idea in the beginning. Honestly? He didn’t want to audition.”

As if that wasn’t bad enough for the Marvel movie, Finn added: “And James [Gunn] didn’t want to see him.”

With a coy smile, she added: “And here we are!”

When pressed on how she finally got Pratt and Gunn in the room together, she admitted the director believes she “tricked” them. She added: “I disagree!”

Finn explained: “I think it was very very fortuitous timing. When Chris was walking into my office while James was walking out. We were all there together and I said: ‘Hey, let’s just do this!'”

The two Hollywood stars agreed, and Pratt began rattling off some of Star-Lord’s memorable lines from the first Guardians movie. Surprisingly, James Gunn was enchanted.

“Within 20 seconds of Chris starting to read the lines James turned to me and said: ‘He’s the guy.'”

Finally locking Pratt into Guardians of the Galaxy was a sigh of relief for the casting director, as they were previously struggling to get anyone in the hot seat.

“We had been auditioning for months to try and find this part,” Finn said. “The character is very specific.”

Now, with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 bringing the Marvel series to a close, Pratt has been looking back on how much he loved the character of Star-Lord.

“It was really emotional,” Pratt told “It was really emotional for so many reasons that it would take too long in this interview to even get into. But it just was emotional. It was a lot of gratitude around the fact that James Gunn actually directed it and was able to do that. Just grateful that he even gave me the job to begin with.”

He added: “It felt gratifying, knowing that critics had said that it would likely be the first Marvel movie to bomb. And what was that gonna be like, to be the first Marvel movie to not be successful? To take these characters that no one knew, and now have them be household names, and to be part of that, and to have rides around the world.”

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 hits cinemas on May 3.
