Coronation Street newcomer auditioned for ten years to honour late dad
Nicky Wheatley (Kimberley Hart-Simpson) made her first appearance in Coronation Street last week, and she hit it off with Daniel Osbourne (Rob Mallard) — that is until he discovered she was a sex worker.
Nicky met Daniel during a swanky lawyers’ drinks reception, and the pair bonded almost immediately.
The young man was immediately drawn to her throw-caution-to-the-wind attitude, and when she suggested they make a night of it, he was ready to do so.
However, it soon came to light that Nicky is a sex worker — and Daniel felt somewhat hurt, as he came to believe she was simply after his money, as opposed to his company.
But does Nicky have feelings for Daniel? Actress Kimberley Hart-Simpson told Metro.co.uk: ‘Way too early to say. She already knows he is a nice person – she can smell bad ones from a mile off.
‘Sometimes people feel a little bit don’t they? There’s certainly an attraction there.’
While the latest episode left this narrative at something of an impasse, we haven’t seen the last of Nicky as she appears once again this week, and for actor Kimberley, a regular role on Corrie is something of a dream come true — especially given that she’s been auditioning for ten years!
She told us: ‘I was auditioning from when I graduated at 22. I’m 33 now. The second I graduated, I have been emailing them. I knew where I was meant to be.’
‘I had this thing this time round – if I didn’t get this one, it wasn’t going to be any other. This character was me – if you don’t get you, step back from acting altogether.’
As Kimberley noted, she’s auditioned several times before, and speaking about a couple of roles she’d previously went for, she said: ‘I was looking through all my backlog and I could’ve been there for weeks. The latest one I went for was Kate’s friend Lolly.
‘I know at one point I was in talks about Maddie but I was slightly over the age threshold.
‘There were also quite a lot of one or two eps and I took this bold step that I’m not sure I’d recommend – I’d do one, two eps anywhere else, but with Corrie it’s either in or out and something substantial. I really had my heart set on Corrie.’
In addition to being a huge fan, the cobbles meant a lot to Kimberley due to her late dad Kevin, who — also a huge fan — requested that she get a part on the soap.
Kimberley continued: ‘I have been brought up on it [Corrie] – it’s just always been there. No one would dare ring the house phone when Corrie was on.
‘My dad was a massive Corrie fan. Every time I went to my dad’s – even if I hadn’t seen him in a month, he’d want me to shut up while Corrie was on, I think it might have mattered more to him than I did! (laughs)
‘Unfortunately I lost my dad in 2007 and one of the last things he said to me just do me a favour and get on Corrie love. We had that shared connection with it.
‘My dad was Kevin Simpson, a drummer. It’s probably where I got the performing from – he really backed it and was a great support.
‘He got so excited at the prospect of it. If he’d known I’d reached the goal he had asked for and what I have dreamed of, it would have done him over. (laughs)
‘He’d be beaming with pride, tell everyone, he’d say ‘my daughter is in Corrie’ for no reason – it would have meant the world to him.’
Coronation Street continues Monday 22 June at 7:30pm on ITV.
