Coronation Street viewers in tears as Ed steps up to racist Don

Coronation Street viewers were left in tears during tonight’s episode, as Ed Bailey (Trevor Michael Georges) confronted racist Don (Phillip Broadbent).

The instalment saw the Bailey family head to the opening party at the Bistro, when Don aimed a vile racist remark in Ed’s direction.

In emotionally-charged scenes, he compared the patriarch to a monkey, and joked about ‘paying him peanuts’.

This was the last straw for Ed, who lashed out at his comments in front of the packed restaurant.

‘I’ve been asked what I eat, what cricket team I support, I’ve heard it all a thousand times,’ he said.

‘But I don’t think any of these good people have heard it. So let’s hear it again, one more time.’

‘He said, “If you pay peanuts, you get monkeys.”’

‘I am weary but as a wise young man said to me, if I give up, then i’m just leaving the fight for someone else. So I’m not giving up.’

When Don uttered a weak ‘sorry’, he added: ’Shove your apology, it’s as pathetic as you are,’ before promptly storming out.

Viewers at home were in bits over the emotional scenes, praising the ITV soap for tackling such a big topic.

‘I’m right beside you and I know I haven’t been up until now. I am truly, utterly sorry,’ he told him – before they shared an embrace as the credits rolled.

Coronation Street researchers, writers and storyliners have been working hard behind the scenes on the plot – and consulted with Baroness Lawrence about the episode in question.

Speaking to Metro.co.uk about the special episode, Cobbles boss Iain MacLeod said: ‘It was due to transmit on Steven Lawrence day and has been impacted by rescheduling. This was done to run on a particular day.

‘It was one of our story team who pitched it and it was to do with the racism the Bailey family experience in their day to day work.’
