Anne Robinson, 76, took over as host of Channel 4’s Countdown from Nick Hewer last month. The journalist is known for her stern attitude towards contestants on game shows ever since she hosted The Weakest Link from 2000 to 2012, taking on a persona where she interrogated guests. But some aren’t pleased she seems to have taken on this attitude towards Countdown players, with several complaining she is too harsh.

A recent episode saw Anne mocking the Isle of Wight as she remarked: “Today marks the sinking of the Mary Rose… some people will do anything to get out of going to the Isle of Wight.”

She also aimed a jibe at contestant Florence Cappleman-Lynes, quipping: “She has got a double-barrelled name which is quite unusual in Rochdale.”

But these frequent comments aren’t going down too well with all viewers. Some went as far as asking for her to be removed from the show.

One took to Twitter to say: “Programme is truly awful with Anne Robinson. It doesn’t flow. She’s rude. Contestants and other presenters seem deeply uncomfortable. Get rid. @Channel4 #countdown.”

Another echoed this, writing: “#Countdown I really must protest against Anne Robinson – her banter is forced, abrupt and rude and. Grace Dent was squirming in embarrassment this afternoon. Her openings with Rachel are equally as dire. Retire FFS !!”

“#countdown Must say an awful lot of rude words coming to light on the daytime edition of Countdown, way before the watershed, wondering if Anne has anything to do with them? Would not surprise me following her reign on her other show,” a third claimed.

Another penned: “It would really liven up Countdown if Anne Robinson was this rude to the contestants…”

Someone else observed: “She thinks she is still on the Weakest Link… tone of the programme has changed.”

Others though enjoy Anne’s tough approach. One fan said: “Anne Robinson has major Cannot be arsed energy on countdown. And I kind of love it! The one word story was excruciatingly painful to watch #Countdown.”

“Don’t you just love ANNE ROBINSON who is now the host of #Countdown Her edgy comments and sharp tongue.. Excellent! “Please @TheBBCtv bring back THE WEAKEST LINK!” Another request.

The serious quiz show star recently ranted about “woke” Britain.

She recalled last month: “A contestant this week on Countdown said he taught English to non-English speaking people, and I said, ‘You mean you teach English to foreigners?’

“And he said, ‘We never say that’. Is that woke? Does anyone know?

“So I am fed up with it, I’m fed up with people telling me I’ve got to say ‘mixed heritage’ and not ‘mixed race’.

“I just think we’re being told what to do by people who aren’t in a position to tell us what to do.”

She concluded: “I don’t want my language mangled – I don’t want to lose the English language.

“I don’t want to offend anyone but we’re well passed whether we offend people.”

The outspoken host also said she would not be able to say many of the things today that she previously said when hosting The Weakest Link.

Countdown airs on weekdays at 2.10pm on Channel 4.
