Death in Paradise: What happened to Ruby Patterson?

Death in Paradise: Ralf Little discusses ‘channeling Columbo’

Death in Paradise is celebrating its 10th anniversary on BBC One, welcoming back fan-favourite DS Florence Cassell (played by Josephine Jobert) to the team. She made her exit back in series eight but looks like she is here to stay as she continues to solve investigations alongside DI Neville Parker (Ralf Little). But as Florence made her return, this meant two other characters made their exits.

What happened to Ruby Patterson in Death in Paradise?

When Florence left her days at Saint Marie behind, the team grew bigger by two.

DS Madeleine Dumas (Aude Legastelois-Bidé) took over Florence’s role while Commissioner Selwyn Patterson’s (Don Warrington) niece Ruby Patterson (Shyko Amos) joined during season eight.

Madeleine had previously worked as a Detective Sergeant in Paris so already had plenty of experience.

But Ruby was still finding her feet in terms of her career and so was taken under the wing of Officer JP Hooper (Tobi Bakare).

However, as Florence has returned for series 10, both Madeleine and Ruby have left Saint Marie.

At the beginning of season 10 episode one, the Commissioner explains that Madeleine had been offered a promotion back in Paris.

As a result, Madeleine was also able to offer Ruby a secondment over there to try working at another police station.

So both Madeleine and Ruby jumped at this opportunity to go to Paris with Ruby starting a new life overseas.

Nearing the end of the first episode of the new series, the commissioner was excited as he was receiving a call from Ruby.

She was supposed to be flying back to Saint Marie and he believed she would be at the airport as they spoke.

However, this wasn’t the case as Ruby told her uncle she was loving life in Paris and was going to extend her stay there indefinitely.

So even though Ruby is no longer in Death in Paradise, she hasn’t been killed off and has still got a strong family connection to the island, thus leaving the door open for a possible return in the future.

Last year, the BBC announced both Amos and Legastelois-Bidé would be leaving Death in Paradise.

In a statement, the BBC said: “After two series bringing law, order, and joy to the streets of Saint Marie, we’re sad to say goodbye to Ruby Patterson who made such a massive impact in such a short time!

“DS Madeleine Dumas will also be departing Saint Marie’s sunny shores,

“We would like to thank Shyko Amos and Aude Legastelois-Bidé for bringing Ruby and Madeleine to life and wish them all the very best for the future.”

Neither the BBC nor Amos herself have explained the reason behind Ruby’s exit.

Amos did take to Instagram though to express her heartfelt thanks to viewers for her time on the beloved comedy-drama.

She posted: “Thank you for giving Ruby a chance because at first you really didn’t.

“You were rough on me the first couple of episodes.

“I remember one of the articles: ‘Ruby slammed, she’s awful.’

“My little heart almost broke I was like ‘Oh my God, they hate me.’

“I read all the comments ‘she’s so annoying’, ‘she’s so boring’, ‘I can’t stand her’, ‘she’s really annoying.’

“And she probably was a bit annoying actually, I can see that.

“Thank you for getting behind her.”

Death in Paradise season 10 continues every Thursday on BBC One.
