Dirty Dancing ‘inspires new TV show with celebrities learning racy dance moves’

It’s no wonder studios are seeking more platforms to perform on, as dancing becomes one of the most-watched genres of reality TV, with The Masked Dancer securing five million viewers for the final episode earlier this month.

A new show in preproduction is reportedly set to teach celebrities how to do the famous routines from Dirty Dancing.

Dirty Dancing is most famous for the climactic lift as Swayze lifts Jennifer Grey to the now-famous The Time of My Life by Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes.

Teasing the new show, a source told The Sun: “The moves aren’t easy. After all, the late, great Swayze was a professional dancer.

"This is one of the best-loved films of all time and offers a really clever theme which will allow them to get celebs dancing.”

The Dirty Dancing lift has gone on to be recreated in a number of different shows and movies such as Crazy Stupid Love, which sees Ryan Gosling lift Emma Stone.

On top of that, Max and Paddy’s Road to Nowhere saw the famous Phoenix Night bouncers training to perform the lift to attract women.

Even Jimmy Fallon had a go with Drew Barrymore in a comical turn that had Jimmy laying on the floor holding Drew up in a much easier version of the move.

While Dirty Dancing is famous for this final moment, what made the indie movie a breakout hit has been attributed to the writing of Eleanor Bergstein who attempted to pursue serious discussion with the movie.

In Life Moves Pretty Fast by Hadley Freeman she discusses the movie and the focus on feminine sexuality through the main character, Baby, writing: “What she wants in Dirty Dancing is to have sex with Johnny, and the film is very, very clear about that.

"It’s no surprise that at MGM none of the men liked the script, or that it was ultimately produced by a woman, because Dirty Dancing is very much a movie about female sexuality.”

The film also explored a pro-abortion stance as a character is forced to seek illegal treatment for an abortion, almost dying in the process as Baby rushes to get her father to help.

Dirty Dancing has a lot of well-defined themes and ideas that it communicated via sexually charged dance, but Swayze and Jennifer were rumoured to have disagreements on set.

Hopefully, the stars of the upcoming show will get along better and continue the stronger discussion Dirty Dancing started.
