EastEnders legend June Brown ordered to carry on smoking by doctors

EastEnders legend June Brown has been told to carry on smoking by doctors – as the shock of quitting could potentially be damaging to her.

The star, who played Dot Cotton on the soap, has smoked for around 70 years.

While she tried to quit last year, she now been advised against it and has been told to have half a pack of cigarettes per day.

John Altman, who starred as ‘Nasty’ Nick Cotton, opened up about how his on-screen mum, who’s now 93, is doing.

‘She is still smoking, unfortunately, but the doctors have told her not to stop now,’ he explained. ‘She loves her ciggies. She smokes at least ten a day.’

He added that June’s eyesight has continued to worsen, but she’s still ‘full of beans’ and we wouldn’t expect anything less.

‘She gets the Kindle and her glasses, so she can still read,’ he continued to The Sun. ‘I get round there when I can. We’re still good friends.’

June remained with the soap in a regular capacity for the majority of the past 35 years, but seemingly decided to depart earlier this year.

In an interview with the Distinct Nostalgia Podcast, June said: ‘I don’t want a retainer for EastEnders, I’ve left. I’ve left for good. I’ve sent her off to Ireland where she’ll stay. I’ve left EastEnders. I did make up a limerick. It’s a bit dirty.

‘I went back to do a good story. Alas and alack, when I got back it had gone up in smoke. I got a small part, a very small part. And that ended up as a big wet fart. Alas and alack, I will never go back.’

During her latest stint, Dot returned to the Square with granddaughter Dotty (Milly Zero), and — as she spent Christmas surrounded by her relatives — she discovered that Sonia Fowler (Natalie Cassidy) had stolen some of the money which Dr Legg (Leonard Fenton) had left to her.
