EastEnders' Max Bowden gifts lonely nan a cushion with his grandfather's face
A good grandson always looks after their nan and EastEnders star Max Bowden has melted hearts with a deeply thoughtful gift for his nan, who is by herself during lockdown.
Inspired by the story of a care home nurse getting a cushion made up with the face of a resident’s late wife – a gift that reduced him to happy tears – Max decided to do the same for his nan.
Care home employee Kia Mariah Tobin’s video went viral and Max, who plays Ben Mitchell in the Walford soap, spoke out on Twitter to commend her thoughtfulness and to thank her for inspiring himself – and hopefully others – to do something similar for elderly relatives who are alone right now.
He shared a picture of his nan, holding the cushion up with a glowing smile and tweeted: ‘Your beautiful gesture inspired me to do the same for my Nan, who is alone at this time.
‘Here’s her with her pillow of my grandfather. Thanks for inspiring something so touching. And it’s lovely to see how much of an impact you have on Ken’s life.’
Care home resident Ken clearly thinks a lot of those looking after him as his face lit with joy even upon seeing them.
But the lovely gift reduced him to grateful tears as he said thank you.
Ken told how he had met his wife Ada while out dancing, just one week after he moved to Liverpool. He said: ‘I can still see that post she was leaning on with her friends.’
They then courted for two months before making plans to move in together and get married. He told how he had proposed to Ada at a dance, adding: ‘We were always dancing. I used to fling her over my shoulder and we would jitterbug. It was lovely.’
Describing Ada, Ken said she was the ‘best little woman in the world’, adding: ‘She was the most caring, beautiful wife anyone could ever wish to have. She never did a thing wrong in her whole life.’
Asked if he now preferred cuddling the cushion to the photo frame, Ken said: ‘Definitely. I cuddle up to it, I [practically] smother myself with it, it’s so beautiful, it’s so soft and lovely.’
