Ellie Simmonds was apprehensive about tackling the Waltz on Saturday night’s Strictly Come Dancing but she needn’t have been. The Paralympian wowed the judges with her incredible performance and was spotted wiping away tears after receiving feedback from the judges.
Judge Motsi Mabuse commented: “I absolutely love the expression in your arms and your hands, but there was a little section over there when you were dancing and you just look up at Nikita and looked into his eyes and smiled.
“I just got the biggest goosebumps ever. That was so magical.
“So work on those feet and it was beautifully good, so work on them and improve it.It was special. What can I say?
Head judge Shirley Ballas added: “There is something magical in something so simple and that is what you delivered today.
“I was getting quite emotional. It was beautifully executed.
“If you bend your standing leg, you will be able to glide on your heel because when you did, it was beautifully placed.
“So a little bit more footwork, also, Nikita, beautiful framing, beautiful holding. You show people that we can all do what we love. Thank you.”
As Ellie went upstairs to reflect on her feedback with Claudia Winkleman, she could be seen wiping a tear from her eye.
It wasn’t just Ellie who was emotional as viewers confessed they were also in tears following the performance.
Nadine Erskine posted: “That was absolutely beautiful from Ellie and Nikita. I’m in tears it amazing #Strictly.”
Anjali Ewing tweeted: “Beautiful start. I’m in tears. Gorgeous song. Oh Ellie!!! Give her a 9. xxx #Strictly.”
Kendal added: “Tears are streaming down my face after that from Ellie and Nikita. #Strictly.”
“Well. WOW. Ellie’s not the only one crying #Strictly #StrictlyComeDancing,” Emma Cadman shared.
Sharon Thomas continued: “That was stunning from Ellie. I’m crying too!! #Strictly.”
Going into week two of Strictly Come Dancing, Will Mellor remained the favourite to win with odds of 7/4.
However, he was followed close behind by Helen Skelton who had odds of 7/2 and Fleur East at 5/2.
Will was joint top of the leaderboard with Hamza Yassin, whose odds were slashed from 25/1 to just 8/1 in a few days.
At the opposite end of the scale, Loose Women star Kaye Adams has odds of 200/1 to win.
Tony Adams, who was bottom of the leaderboard with professional partner Katya Jones, has odds of 100/1 to win.
Alex Apati of Ladbrokes said: “The race for this year’s Glitterball Trophy is well and truly on, with no less than five names currently priced 8/1 or shorter to go all the way.
“Will Mellor has flown out of the traps to take the lead in the betting, but it’s a marathon, not a sprint, and the odds suggest this Strictly battle is far from over.”
Strictly Come Dancing results air on Sunday on BBC One at 7.15pm.
