Emotional Corrie boss reveals his proudest career moment as show stays on air

Coronation Street boss Iain MacLeod has revealed that he’s never been prouder than when the soap resumed production after being forced to shut down earlier this year amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The ITV serial drama suspended production back in March, and in an effort to ensure it remained on air for as long as possible, episodes which were completed prior to the shut down were rationed out at three a week instead of the usual six.

However, in spite of fears that the soap would run out of episodes, production resumed earlier this week, and Corrie boss Iain revealed that it was a particularly special moment for him.

Speaking to Metro.co.uk, Iain said: ‘After filming on Monday, we had a conference call for a debrief and I am under no illusions about the challenging times ahead.’

‘But 100s of my hours, creative points and passion went into making that day successful so it’s emotional how well it went.

‘The show means everything to the nation and to everyone who works on it – that day was an emotional day with everyone pulling together, it’s the proudest I have been.’

Managing Director of Continuing Drama John Whiston was equally full of praise for the cast and crew.

He said: ‘It has been incredible from every bit of the team. All the heads of departments who have worked out how they can work safely.

‘The cast have been brilliant – the appetite to come back has been really gratifying, especially given that we have all watched the news and done nothing but, so the fear that engendered was strong.

‘Moving on from that fear to feel it’s the right point to come back to work, we’re very lucky to be at that point. Soaps bring a bit of normality into life and can be a real antidote to what is happening out there.’

Coronation Street continues Wednesday 10 June at 7:30pm on ITV.
