Following the ending of Avengers Endgame, Marvel fans have been wondering what will become of Chris Evans’ Captain America. Old Steve Rogers is well over 100-years-old now after having gone back in time to live with Peggy Carter. But in the opening of The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, set six months later, Cap’s whereabouts aren’t exactly clear, nor is it certain if he’s actually alive or not.
Speaking with Entertainment Weekly recently, Marvel boss Kevin Feige shut down rumours of Evans returning as Captain America to the MCU.
He said: “I rarely answer no to anything anymore because things are always surprising me with what happens, but that rumour, I think, was dispelled rather quickly by the man himself.”
Feige was referring to Evans tweeting “News to me” to the reports in January of early talks regarding a comeback.
So by the sounds of it, Captain America won’t be around in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, but where exactly has he gone?
Our best bet is that Old Steve returned to the alternate timeline he created by going back in time to live with Peggy.
This means he had to jump across back to the main MCU timeline to give Falcon his shield at the end of Avengers Endgame, which directors The Russo Brothers have now confirmed.
Speaking with Lights Camera Barstool podcast in February, Joe Russo said: “Based on everything that happened, he would have been in a branch reality and then had to have shifted over to this, so jumped from one to the other and handed the shield off…
“One thing that’s clear that Anthony and I have discussed, I don’t know that we’ve discussed this publicly at all, Cap would have had to have travelled back to the main timeline.”

Joe added: “hat’s something that, yes, he would have been in a branch reality, but he would have to travel back to the main timeline to give that shield to Sam Wilson.”
So if Cap has suddenly disappeared in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and it’s not clear if he’s died of old age, surely the next most likely scenario is that he returned to that branch timeline.
But why would he do that if Peggy died during the events of Captain America Civil War in 2016?
Well, according to the rules of time travel outlined in Endgame, this is an alternate timeline where they lived together and for all we know they led entirely different lives.

Captain America RETURN ‘in works” to ‘explore Infinity Stones return’ [CAPTAIN AMERICA]

Presumably, Old Cap used some Pym particles to jump across to the main MCU timeline so he could give Sam Wilson his shield.
Now Falcon did ask about Peggy after seeing his wedding ring, but Steve didn’t want to tell Sam about his life with her.
And there’s no evidence his alternate Peggy is dead, so maybe Old Cap’s returned to her in the other timeline.
With the multiverse opening up in future MCU outings, maybe this isn’t the last we’ve seen of Evans’ Steve Rogers even if he’s not coming back anytime soon.
Next March sees the release of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which should hopefully bring in alternate version of well known Marvel characters.
While there’s also Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, which will introduce the time-travelling villain Kang the Conqueror.
We’d be very surprised if not just Captain America, but also Iron Man, didn’t make cameo appearances at some point in the future of the franchise.
After all, with time travel and the multiverse to explore, anything is now possible for the MCU.
