Where did Meredith on ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ leave off in season 16?
Meredith and DeLuca broke up in season 16 of the long-running medical drama, but we know that doesn’t always mean the end of a relationship on Grey’s Anatomy.
Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh) sent McWidow to Meredith in the form of a “package.” The two had a friendly, flirty banter going throughout the second half of the season. In the season finale, Meredith finally agreed to go for drinks with Cormac.
However, she runs into DeLuca and stops to help get him home on her way out of the hospital. So, season 16 left fans with a massive unknown about who Meredith might end up with.

Grey’s Anatomy is finally filming again, so Ellen Pompeo celebrated season 17 with a photo of her and Richard Flood. The two are both wearing masks and scrubs and standing very close to one another.
“First time back in my scrubs,” Pompeo’s caption began. Since we shut down filming, 7000 healthcare workers have died from COVID. I dedicate my season 17 to all who have fallen and to every one of you who, by the grace of God, is still standing. This season is for you with humility and a bit of humor to get us through and endless amounts of gratitude. I hope we do you proud.”
Fans and fellow cast members all commented on the post how excited they all are that filming is starting.
“Now, this is a new duo I want to see more of in season 17,” one fan wrote on Reddit. “Love that she posted this pic.”
Fans aren’t sure if the photo means anything about Meredith and McWidow, but they want to believe it hints at their future relationship.
The showrunner doesn’t know who she would rather see Meredith with on ‘Grey’s Anatomy’
“I’m at the point with that story where I don’t know who I am rooting for,” Vernoff told TVLine. “I don’t know if I think that DeLuca is rising to a level of dark and twisty and life experience that makes him somehow a [suitably] mature partner for Meredith. Or if all that Hayes has been through in his life already makes him her equal. I am delighted to have such a conundrum.”
It looks like we will have to wait for the return of Grey’s Anatomy Season 17 to see which love interest Meredith falls for.
“I thought that both Giacomo and Richard rose so beautifully to the occasion of the storytelling,” she adds. “You write a script and you think it’s one thing and then you see it shot and put it together and it becomes something entirely different. I honestly don’t know how it will end.”
