Harlots premieres on Wednesday (August 5) at 9pm on BBC Two. Viewers will be treated to a double bill of episodes every Wednesday on the channel. Harlots is set in 18th century London and the brothel wars between the ladies of Covent Garden.
Who is in the cast of Harlots?
Margaret Wells – Samantha Morton
Samantha Morton stars as Margaret Wells, the madam of an up and coming brothel in London’s Covent Garden.
She is the former sex worker of her rival Lydia Quigley (played by Lesley Manville).
Morton is a BAFTA TV and Golden Globe-winning actress and has also revealed nominations for two Oscar and a Primetime Emmy Award.
Her credits include Morven Callar, Longford, Elizabeth: The Golden Age and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.
She also recently appeared in AMC’s The Walking Dead as Alpha before making quite the exit.
Speaking to the BBC, Morton described Margaret Wells as a “survivor”.
The Oscar nominee said: “She has found a language and behaviour for herself akin to her environment. She is what she is because of her surroundings.
“Margaret Wells has had it tough, yet she’s incredibly optimistic and joyful. She loves life and loves her children, she doesn’t suffer fools and has fought hard to get where she’s got. She’s loyal but do not cross her.

Lydia Quigley – Lesley Manville
Manville, OBE portrays, the madam of an extravagant brothel with clients from the judiciary, nobility, and upper echelons of Georgian society.
The actress is best known for playing Cyril Woodcock in Phantom Thread, a role for which she received an Academy Award nomination.
She is also well known for playing Cathy in the BBC comedy, Mum.
Her other credits include World on Fire, Emmerdale, Solider Solider and The Alchemist and Six Degrees of Separation.
Manville said: “Lydia is a very high class, top end madam who runs a bawdy house.
“She is powerful and ruthless. Lydia doesn’t seem to care about very many people and she does terrible things.”
Charlotte Wells – Jessica Brown Findlay
Jessica Brown Findlay plays Charlotte Wells, one of Margaret’s’ two daughters.
Findlay Brown is best known for her performance as Lady Sybil Crawley in Downtown Abbey.
She also played the role of Emelia Conan Doyle in the 2011 British comedy-drama feature film Albatross.
Findlay described her character as “headstrong” and “stubborn.”
She said: “Charlotte Wells is headstrong, to say the least, stubborn to a fault, wonderfully infuriating. Sometimes she knows what best to do.
“And then out of that stubbornness decides to do the complete opposite. She doesn’t conform.”
Lucy Wells – Eloise Smyth
Eloise Smyth stars as Lucy Wells, Margaret Well’s youngest and favourite daughter.
Smyth is an up and coming actress best known for her portrayal as Lucy in Harlots.
Her prior credits include the film How to Talk to Girls At Parties, starring alongside Elle Fanning, Alex Sharp and Nicole Kidman and Plan B’s Ill Manors.

William North – Danny Sapani
Danny Sapani portrays Wiliam North, the son of a slave and the husband of Margaret Wells.
Sapani most recently appeared in Killing Eve season three as Jamie.
He is also well known for his role as Medical Frigate Captain in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, The Crown and M’Kathu in Black Panther.
Sapani also starred in Penny Dreadful as Sembene and Berber the Moor in The Bastard Executioner.
Sir Geroge Howard – Hugh Skinner
Hugh Skinner starred in season one of Harlots as Sir George Howard, an aspiring member of parliament who frequents Charlotte Wells.
Skinner is best known for playing Harry in Fleabag and Prince William in The Windsors.
He stars in the new Sky Atlantic series, Little Birds, as Hugo Cavendish-Smyth.
