Strictly Come Dancing fans saw Jacqui Smith become the first female Home Secretary to take to the dance floor on Saturday night as she performed her first routine alongside veteran professional dancer, Anton Du Beke. The pair soon became a hit with those watching at home but already look at the risk of being sent home after only scoring 13 points. Luckily, Jacqui seems more confident ahead of her Samba this weekend and explained what advice Anton has given her to help ease the impact of training sessions.

Jacqui’s first routine saw her bring politics to the dance floor as she donned a rosette during her Foxtrot.

The pair danced to Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life from Monty Python – but it didn’t go down so well with the judging panel.

Jacqui and Anton found themselves at the bottom of the leaderboard after a three from Craig Revel Horwood saw them slip down the rankings.

But speaking on Tuesday lunchtime’s instalment of Loose Women, the former politician assured there would be better things to come.

And whilst speaking to the panel, one person had a particular interest in her partnership with Anton.

Ruth Langsford, who was leading the chat to Jacqui this lunchtime, was partnered with the longest-running pro back in 2017.

The host quizzed Jacqui on whether Anton had told her to “put her feet in ice-cold water” to help after hours of training.

And Jacqui admitted she had indeed been given the same tip by her professional dance partner.

Jacqui soon went on to tease her vast improvement after her low scores last week as she put things into context.

She explained: “Two or three weeks ago when I first started on the show… even when we did the launch show, I’d only had about three hours practice.

“By the time I got to this show [on Saturday] I’d had seven or eight days practice and hopefully this Saturday they’ll be more progress!”

The guest told the panel she would be performing a Samba this weekend, vastly different to the ballroom routine she had kicked things off with.

The panel probed Jacqui on how different it was not being able to have as much time in person

But luckily, she is able to huge Anton, adding: “Because I’m bubbling with Anton I am able to have a hug with Anton!

“I must be doing okay with this week because he’s brought in the special teabags this morning!” Added the star – will she come out and surprise everyone this weekend?

Ruth had earlier asked the contestant how “terrified” she had been ahead of the first live show on Saturday night.

Jacqui said: “You know Ruth, it’s also enormously exciting when you’re waiting there backstage what you’ve been working on all week

“It’s absolutely brilliant, what an opportunity… I’m having the time of my life!”

Jacqui is currently looking the most likely contestant to find themselves in the dance-off this weekend in the first results show of the series at 4/7 odds to leave the competition according to bookmakers Coral.

“Our betting predicts it’s going to be all over for Jacqui just after it began. She’s odds on to be eliminated this weekend and be the first celebrity sent packing on Strictly this year,” said Coral’s Harry Aitkenhead.

Strictly Come Dancing continues on Saturday at 7:15pm on BBC One and Loose Women airs weekdays from 12:30pm on ITV.
