Jeremy Renner fans ‘in tears’ as actor details ‘horrific’ accident

Diane Sawyer talks to Jeremy Renner about his accident

In January, Marvel star Jeremy Renner suffered blunt chest trauma and orthopaedic injuries after being hit by a seven-tonne snowplough at his home in Lake Tahoe. Fans were moved to tears as the star shared his fight for survival during an emotional tell-all interview with Diane Sawyer.

For the first time since his accident, Jeremy Renner has opened up about his near-fatal accident which left him with over 30 broken bones.

Throughout the interview, viewers also gained a glimpse of his gruelling physical therapy as well as his inspiring will to live.

During this first TV appearance, the actor spoke about his initial fears as he remembered the harrowing experience.

The 52-year-old recalled: “I started to move my leg and I said, ‘Oh that one’s really messed up.’

“They said, ‘That leg’s going to be a problem,’ I was wondering what my body was going to look like.

“’Am I just going to be a spine and a brain like a science experiment, is that my existence now? What’s my existence going to be like?’”

Viewers were moved to tears as Hawkeye star questioned whether he would ever fully recover.

Taking to Twitter, an emotional @andydv27 shared: “Just finished watching @JeremyRenner’s interview with @DianeSawyer on @ABC and it just brought me to tears. What a strong man and what a hero.”

@SmoakandAsh tweeted: “Crying my eyes out watching the @DianeSawyer interview with #JeremyRenner. Knowing how close we were to losing him? I am not okay.”

Although he almost lost his life, Jeremy revealed he had “no regrets,” as he took full ownership of the accident and admitted he would “do it again” to save his nephew, Alex.

The youngster had unhooked the chain connecting the truck and the snowplough, Jeremy stuck one foot out of it to look back at Alex, but he did not set the parking brake.

He then lost his footing and fell out of the machine, as he was worried the snowplough would roll back and crush his nephew, Jeremy stepped on the moving wheel track to try and stop it.

But instead, it threw him forward, ran him over, broke over 30 bones, collapsed a lung and pierced his liver.

Jeremy told Diane Sawyer: “You shouldn’t be outside the vehicle when you’re operating it, you know what I mean? It’s like driving a car with one foot out of the car.

“But it is what it was,” he added. “And it’s my mistake, and I paid for it.”

Jeremy Renner’s full interview with Diane Sawyer is available on ABC in the USA and on Disney+ in the UK.
