John Torode details ‘most difficult part’ of Christmas: ‘They’re always a bit more rowdy’

This Christmas will be unlike any other for many across the world and John has opened up about how he will be celebrating with wife Lisa. He explained they usually call his family and speak to his dad, which is always “difficult” for him as his family remains in Australia.

“It wouldn’t be Christmas for me without a phone call to my dad,” he explained.

“It’s always the most difficult part for me because I may have left my home many, many years ago [in Australia] but Christmas is one of those times that I will always talk to my dad.

“I usually call on Christmas morning, which is evening for them so they’ve had their Christmas day and he’s usually at my brother’s house so I’ll get to see the family and chat.

“They may have had a few jars by then so they’re always a bit more rowdy than our part of the world!”

John explained he and Lisa will probably be spending Christmas together for the second year as a married couple.

“I guess we’ll just be in our house this year, I’m not quite sure just no,” he said.

“I don’t think we’ll be doing any travelling abroad that’s for sure.”

Lisa added: “Yes, we don’t really know yet, but whatever [happens] we will have a lovely Christmas.

“We’ve had lots of time locked down and it will feel a bit like that when we’ve got those lovely ‘No Man’s Land’ days in between Christmas and New Year, but there’s something special about Christmas because you don’t have to do anything because it’s a holiday and you can watch Christmas movies and really enjoy the chocolate, the cheese and all the food.”

The couple will be whipping up a delicious breakfast – a cheesy croissant bake with a cherry bellini – and a Christmas dinner traybake for their festive special.

But they explained they will be enjoying a roast turkey, even though it’s not Lisa’s favourite thing: “But I have to have it because it’s Christmas, and it’s with all the timings.”

John added: “When we start getting lunch ready, who knows what will happen at that stage – maybe some more ham or slice of cheese or something pinched from the side of the roast – and lunchtime feast will entail a couple of glasses of wine and definitely some bread sauce!

“There is also some red cabbage, because Lisa’s mum used to always do that, so that’s always on the table as well.

“And there will often be something vegan too because if Lisa’s sister and her daughter are around, they are vegan.”

Looking on from Christmas, the pair are hoping they’ll be able to travel in the New year.

Revealing his desires for 2021, John dished: “To be able to go to Australia to see my family.

“So probably like everybody, to be able to travel a little bit and I’d like this bloody virus to go away.

“And I’d also like to swap the seasons with Australia if we can, just for one year because it’s getting cold here already and last weekend it was 28 degrees in Sydney – so if we can have 28 degrees from now until May, and they have cold weather for a while and then if we go back in the summer again, it’ll be good!”
