Loose Women's Kelle Bryan grew up wanting 'lighter-skinned' children
Kelle Bryan revealed she used to wish her children would be lighter-skinned when she was growing up.
The Eternal singer opened up about her Caribbean heritage on today’s Loose Women, and was told people with lighter skin are more likely to have a better life.
Kelle shares two children – Regan and Kayori – with partner Jay Gudgeon and stressed that she eventually grew up to be ‘proud of being black’.
‘When I was little, I’m quite embarrassed to say this, but I used to wish my babies would be lighter-skinned and I wished that they’d have good hair,’ she told today’s panel, consisting of Andrea McLean, Coleen Nolan, and Denise Welch.
‘When I was little that’s what I wanted.
‘It’s awful to say that but in Caribbean culture, it’s often seen if you’re lighter-skinned and if you’ve got really nice hair you’re going to make it and have a better life or better quality of life.’
‘It’s horrible to say that and I quickly grew out of it, thankfully,’ she continued.
‘I got to a teenager and began to embrace my culture and where I came from and understood more about who I am and my identity and then became very proud of being black.’
Also on today’s Loose Women, Coleen returned to the ITV studio for the first time in five months and admitted she sobbed all the way down to London.
Loose Women airs weekdays at 12.30am on ITV.
