What is the Salamander letter?

The Salamander Letter was a document about the history of the Latter-Day Saint movement.

The Latter-Day Saint Movement (LDS) is the name given to a collection of independent church groups which can trace their origins to the Christian Restorationist movement, founded by Joseph Smith in the late 1820s.

The theology of the LDS is Mormonism, which sees itself as restoring the early Christian church with early revelations.

The Salamander Letter, which first appeared in 1984, was controversial as it illustrated a view of the Latter-Day Saint founder, Joseph Smith’s life which contrasted sharply with the beliefs of the Latter-Day Saint Church.
