Peaky Blinders season six is currently on hiatus but this hasn’t stopped viewers delving into past outings of the show. Among the most shocking moments was the death of Grace Shelby (played by Annabelle Wallis) and one fan has pointed out how much the moment impacted Tommy Shelby (Cillian Murphy) in the series.

Tommy and Grace’s love story on Peaky Blinders was never simple with plenty of heartbreak for both of the characters.

Fans will remember how Grace was first introduced as a mole for Inspector Campbell (Sam Neill), brought in to find out information about the leader of the Peaky Blinders.

However, the pair soon fell in love before parting ways when Tommy found out about her betrayal.

Grace moved to New York and remarried but soon found herself drawn back into Tommy’s orbit in the second season.

After finding out she was pregnant, the duo reconciled and got married in season three with Grace becoming the lady of Tommy’s Birmingham manor.

Although, their happily ever after was not meant to be and she was shot dead under the orders of Vicente Changretta (Kenneth Colley) at her charity fundraiser.

The devastating death set Tommy on a path of vengeance which lasted into season four, but some fans might not have noticed how much Grace’s death impacted him.

Now one viewer has taken to Reddit to point out how much Tommy has changed since the moment.

User A-Diddy07 wrote: “I realised in season one you can see Tommy laughing and smiling much more than the other seasons, and when you think about it it makes sense.

“He lost his best friend in episode one of season two as well as grace leaving, still in season two you can see Tommy laughing and smiling just less.

“Now in season three in episode one Tommy is still fine, you can see him smiling as well as joking. But then after grace dies, I haven’t seen Tommy smile since then.

“When I first watched it I thought Tommy didn’t take Grace’s death as hard as he should have. But now I realise he did.”

Back in October 2019, creator Steven Knight revealed how true this was to fans.

In a Reddit AMA session, he admitted he had to kill Grace off as Tommy could not be allowed true happiness.

During an Ask Me Anything session on Reddit, writer and creator Steven Knight addressed this when a fan asked why he killed off Grace.

He said: “The point with Grace [is] that if she had lived, Tommy would have been happy. He wasn’t meant to be happy.”

Tommy star Cillian Murphy also opened up about how he changed after Grace died in an interview with the BBC.

He explained: “I think the pre-war Tommy smiled and laughed a lot. He wanted to work with horses, he was very romantic.

“All of these things – you see scratches of them throughout the show and there are times when he feels he is getting towards some sort of healing when he’s with Grace.

“And then it’s taken away again and he retreats back into that kind of shell emotionally.”

Fans of the show will be hoping to see Tommy find happiness again when the show returns with its penultimate season.

However, the sixth outing is currently on hold due to production shutting down in the wake of coronavirus COVID-19.

Therefore, fans may be waiting a little while before new episodes of the hit gangster series are released.

Peaky Blinders seasons 1-5 are available to stream on Netflix.
