Starz has confirmed a raft of Power spin-off series in the works including Book II: Ghost, Book III: Raising Kanan, Book IV: Influence and Book V: Force. Each of the shows will focus on a different character from within the Power universe. Many fans are still distraught about the death of lead character James “Ghost” St Patrick (played by Omari Hardwick) – but was he always fated to die?

Was Ghost St Patrick always going to die?

Ghost met a tragic end in Power after he was shot dead by his own son Tariq St Patrick (Michael Rainey Jr.).

There were several possible suspects, who were whittled down in the last five episodes of season six.

In the end, fans learnt the truth and were left devastated as the drug dealer met a Shakespearean-like demise at the hands of Tariq.

His mother Tasha St Patrick (Naturi Naughton) tried to stop Tariq from pulling the trigger but she was a second too late as Ghost fell to his death.

However, his death shouldn’t have been a shock to fans with the kingpin always slated either to die or banged up in jail.

Ghost already went to prison during the show, so it looked like death was inevitable.

Speaking about Ghost’s murder, Power creator Courtney A. Kemp told Deadline back in February how the character was never going to get a happy ending.

She explained: “My goal was just to provide great entertainment, and I hope I have.

“You know, I think there are people who are disappointed that Ghost is dead, but I promised that from the beginning.

“I said he would be dead or in jail. I don’t think I lied, you know?”

Kemp continued: “And then the other thing is, is he really? Because his legacy lives on in his son and in his youngest daughter doesn’t it.

“We may yet see that those things and there are stories to be told there, as well.”

Her words also suggest Tasha was always destined for prison – the consequence a life of crime.

Now it will be up to Tariq to essentially make amends for his own crime after his mother took the fall.

Reflecting on Tasha’s decision to go down for her child’s mistake, Kemp said: “I feel as a mom, I’ve made a lot of sacrifices for my kid, and I would do it again.

“I don’t think you ever regret making a sacrifice for your child. I just don’t think you do.

“I can only speak to being a mother, but I’ve seen fathers also give the ultimate for their child, you know?

“So Tasha going to jail instead when Tariq has his whole life ahead of you, and you blame yourself for some of your choices, why not? Why not?”

Tariq and Tasha’s story will continue in Book II, but the college student’s arc could be one of redemption for his sins.

Perhaps Tariq could get the happy ending his father so desperately craved and be able to go legitimate.

Alternatively, given Tariq’s acumen, he could even become a white-collar criminal rather than just a low-level gangster.

This would certainly show a progression in Power from Ghost and Tasha’s humble roots to a more sophisticated form of criminality.

Tariq’s ascension would also give another flavour to the Powerverse but fans will have to wait and see how Book II plays out and if the story will evolve.
