Re-live Dame Barbara's EastEnders journey as Peggy's first episode airs today

EastEnders fans can go back to the very beginning of Peggy Mitchell’s time in Walford, as Barbara Windsor’s first episode as the iconic landlady airs today.

If you’re a fan of the quintessential EastEnders matriarch — and let’s be real: who isn’t? — then you’ll no doubt be grabbing your popcorn and sitting down in front of the telly to yell ‘Get outta my pub!’ this afternoon at the top of your voice.

Yes, Dame Barbara’s iconic arrival in the serial drama is featured in the first of today’s two classic outings on Drama — and its safe to say that Phil (Steve McFadden) is taken aback when his mum pops by!

The BBC One soap has been airing two episodes daily on Drama since August 2018, when it commenced from the very first episode.

With the exception of one or two, almost every outing of the serial drama from 1985-1994 has been aired via these afternoon repeats.

While today’s episode will mark the arrival of Barbara — and thus the beginning of Peggy’s 22-year story in Walford — it isn’t actually the first time that Peggy appeared in EastEnders.

The character was previously portrayed by actress Jo Warne for a handful of episodes in 1991 — and these particular instalments aired on Drama last year.

With the soap having been forced to go on hiatus amid the Covid-19 pandemic, a selection of iconic episodes have been airing each and every Tuesday on BBC One too, and Mitchell matriarch Peggy has featured in a number of them.

The landlady’s unforgettable showdown with Pat Butcher (Pam St Clement) from 1998 was aired several weeks back, and the legendary Bonfire night instalment from 2000 — which saw Peggy confront Pat and Frank (Mike Reid) over their affair — airs next week.

Barbara Windsor’s first episode as Peggy airs today, Thursday August 13 at 1pm on Drama.
